By Chris Walker

Introduction

Welcome to Schofield Barracks home to the headquarters of the US Army Garrison Hawaii, on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii! The garrison can be traced back to as early as 1908, however, the post grew quickly during World War II. The installation has filled various support roles for the Pacific and is the home of the 25th Infantry Division (Light), US Army Support Command Hawaii, the 45th Corps Support Group (Forward), and the US Army Law Enforcement Command (Prov). The garrison is headquartered at Wheeler Army Airfield and serves nearly 100,000 soldiers, civilians, and family members stationed on the islands of Hawaii. Schofield Barracks is just one of the 22 Army installations around the islands and home to the 25th Infantry Division. It is set at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range on Oahu and covers 17,725 acres. Schofield Weather

The island of Oahu is a tropical paradise. The weather can vary dramatically depending on what part of the island you are on and what the prevailing winds are blowing against the mountains. The island is at a similar latitude to the Caribbean so you can expect warm and pleasant tropical weather all year round. The winter months average a little more rain yet the days are a little less humid than during the later summer months. Summers are warm with lows in the 70s and highs up to the mid 90s. The winds depend on which part of the island you are on with the North Shore famous for high winds creating massive surf. The south side is protected and excellent for longboard surfing and playing on the beach. Rain can lash the sides of the mountains on one side while just a mile away the other side of the ridge is a sunny and beautiful day. Enjoy the sun and surf but always keep a light rain jacket handy! Outdoor Activities

What is there that you can’t do in Hawaii?! Between surfing, scuba diving, whale watching, shark cage diving, parasailing, hiking, horseback riding, luaus, fishing, or just lazing on the beach, you’ll spend most of your time outdoors in the sun.

Surfing and Diving

There are excellent dive shops and tours all over. I have had great experiences with the folks at Aaron’s Dive Shop in Kailua for good boat and shore dives. There are literally hundreds of places you can rent surfboards, kayaks, and paddle boards around the island. Taking a lesson is always worth it from the friendly guides who live for the waves. The more adventurous and experienced surfers might try the North Shore near Turtle Bay Resort for some beautiful and big surf.

Dole Plantation Tours

A popular tour is the Dole Plantation which features pineapple Dole Whip Ice cream, tours of the pineapple fields and native performers.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding through the mountains and fields offers amazing views of the island. Gunstock Ranch has a friendly staff and gentle horses for beginners as well as advanced riders.

Hiking

Hiking is a fantastic activity with a multitude of trails through the jungle, botanical gardens, ridges, fields, waterfalls, beach trails and cliffs, and even World War II military outposts and bunkers.

There is plenty of shopping for the tourists in Waikiki and Honolulu. If you’re looking for some outlet shopping, try the Waikele Premium Outlets in Pearl City. Looking to explore more options?
