MEET YOLANDA GORE, FORT MEADE'S FIRST FEMALE ARMY GARRISON COMMANDER

By Allison Kirschbaum

Throughout the years, women have been paving the way in the man's world, reshaping history. They have been involved in science, technology, politics, and the military. A few years ago, Kamala Harris made a buzz when she became the first female to become commander-in-chief. Even though it is only for 85 minutes, it did make an impact. Now, another woman is paving the way, as she is the first female to become an Army garrison commander, and she is Col. Yolanda Gore. It must be difficult for these women to crawl up the ladder in a man-dominated world, but everything is changing.

How to Become an Army Garrison Commander

Holding one of the highest military positions is difficult to achieve; it involves expertise, leadership skills, and education. To be considered for the post, you need a senior-level position, such as a Colonel, so you'll need to climb up the ladder and gain experience.

Aside from crawling to the ranks, it would help if you also had a bachelor's degree. This is required. You will have an advantage if you attend graduate school programs in the military, such as the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.

Gaining experience from different command positions is also vital. This includes leading at the battalion or brigade levels, which is crucial as it demonstrates one's capability to lead. Staff assignments are another factor in reaching the commander level. You need to at least serve in various staff positions, as this will help you understand the various Army operations and administration. This experience is helpful in adequately managing the responsibilities of an Army garrison commander.

Another essential aspect to consider is attending the Garrison Pre-Command Course, a training program designed for new leaders. Lastly, give your best, as the selection process is tight. Everything will be based on your experience, performance, and potential to accelerate to higher leadership roles.

Col. Yolanda Gore: The New Army Garrison Commander

She is now the new 89th Army garrison commander, breaking the stigma to become the first female commander in Fort Meade, Maryland. Col. Gore formerly served at the Pentagon as a strategic initiative chief or the Army's deputy chief of staff over personnel for Deputy Chief of Staff, G1, Lt. Gen. Douglas F. Stitt.

In her previous position, Col. Gore mentioned that she was more focused on public affairs. She got involved in various military honors, ceremonies, and high-profile media queries. However, she has been more involved in medals of honor ceremonies and worked hand in hand with the Secretary of the Army Office.

The new Army garrison commander even expressed her enthusiasm for the latest chapter of her career, mentioning that it is one of the most exciting parts of her profession. She even added that she is eager to meet new people and take challenges to the next level. Col. Gore also admitted to the significant transition her new role entails, as she will now be running a whole installation.

During her tour, she admitted to discovering so much about the garrison and the significance of every detail, such as the surprising purpose of the water tower and the complexities of each facility, such as the PX. Indeed, there would be a lot of adjustments and things to absorb. The change of ceremony will take place on August 6, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Club Meade.

A Brief History of Fort Meade

Fort Meade is the second-largest Army garrison installation in population. It contains over 120 organizations, such as the National Security Agency, Defense Media Activity, U.S. Cyber Command, Architect of the Capitol, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency. It is also home to various Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force units and is the largest employer in Maryland.

It is located approximately 30 miles north of the Pentagon, is 107 years old, and was named after George S. Meade, the Union General who served as commander of the Army of the Potomac.

Before the name change, it was formerly known as Camp Annapolis Junction. It opened in 1917 as a training camp and later served as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II and a recruit training post. Fort Meade has a rich history, from housing air and radar defense systems during the Cold War to housing the nation’s intelligence assets.
