REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. Brig. Gen. Todd Royar, commanding general of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, was promoted to the rank of major general during a July 11 ceremony.

Gen. Gus Perna, Army Materiel Command commander, hosted the ceremony, held at AMCOM Headquarters and attended by hundreds of distinguished visitors, family members, friends and the AMCOM workforce.

“I didn’t get here by myself,” said Royar. “There are three categories of people who have shaped me throughout my life and career. My family is the first group. My family shaped and molded my character and values. The second and third are lumped together – mentors and friends. I have learned something from this group every day of my career. It has been an honor to serve with you.”

Royar assumed command at AMCOM last month, leading a diverse team of more than 16,000 life-cycle management professionals who develop and deliver responsive aviation, missile and calibration materiel readiness to the Army. He oversees six major organizations and commands. These include: Corpus Christi Army Depot in Texas and Letterkenny Army Depot in Pennsylvania; the AMCOM Logistics Center on Redstone Arsenal; the Army Aviation Center Logistics Command at Fort Rucker, Alabama; the U.S. Army Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Activity and the Security Assistance Management Directorate, both of which are located on Redstone Arsenal.

Perna described Royar as a talented leader.

“I have sat on many promotion boards,” said Perna. “The Army’s leaders have great talent and have proven themselves in the last 17 years of combat; and this leader equally so.”

Perna went on to describe Royar as confident, displaying the finest character and commitment to the Army.

“He has the character that we want to reflect in our great Army. The character to be responsible for the workforce and their families as we move forward to do our Nation’s bidding. Only leaders of the strongest character can take on these roles and responsibilities Todd Royar has that character,” said Perna.

Royar graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1988 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Army Aviation. Throughout his career, he has served in units in the United States, Germany and Republic of South Korea in both staff positions and command assignments. He has also deployed multiple times in support of Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Royar is also a graduate of several advanced military schools and technical courses. He has earned two Master of Military and Science degrees.

Throughout his 30-plus year career, Royar has received numerous awards and decorations. Top among these accolades are the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Legions of Merit and three Bronze Stars. He has also earned the Combat Action Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Master Army Aviator Badge.

This is Royar’s second assignment at Redstone Arsenal. He previously served as the AMCOM Chief of Staff from 2015 to 2017. Now as commanding general, he is charged with ensuring that AMCOM is doing everything they can to support Soldiers and provide Army readiness. During his remarks at the ceremony, Royar stressed that everything we do is in support of the Warfighter.

“It is truly an honor to serve,” said Royar, a native of Iowa City, Iowa. “I am very grateful to continue to serve in the Army and to be an advocate for the Warfighters and Soldiers we serve. Remember them this organization exists to serve the Warfighter. I am honored, humbled and privileged to continue that service as part of AMCOM and AMC.”
