The Virginia Department of Health divides the state into health districts for public health care, and Hampton Roads counties and cities work with nine of them. Some cover several smaller entities and others, like the Chesapeake Health District, are coextensive with their population centers. There is some geographic overlap.

Services and hours vary depending on each clinic’s resources, and those seeking care always should contact a center in advance to make sure their specific need can be met there. For qualifying patients, charges are adjusted based on ability to pay.

Common services include pediatric and well-baby visits, obstetrics and gynecology, family planning, geriatrics, vaccinations, health nutrition education and counseling, obesity and diabetes prevention and management, primary care, internal medicine, family practice, diagnostic laboratory and dental services, medication assistance, pharmacy services, AIDS assistance, sexually transmitted disease prevention, tuberculosis control, domestic and sexual violence prevention, the WIC program, the Child & Adult Care Food Program, health care for the homeless and case management and referrals.
