Depot, community bands together to celebrate the brave

Story by Alexandria Soller on 05/29/2019

Martin Luther king Jr. once said, “If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live;” and for the brave men and women of the Armed Forces that is the United States of America.

No matter the branch of the military, their mission and values will always unite them. A number of events in Northeastern Pennsylvania celebrating Armed Forces Day reflected just how true this notion really is. Tobyhanna Army Depot joined forces with members of the local community to host a luncheon, cake cutting ceremony and parade.

The NEPA Armed Forces Parade luncheon at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center kicked off the week-long gala with hundreds in attendance on May 16. The luncheon drew active duty service members, veterans, family members and others with ties to the military. All proceeds from the luncheon funded the Scranton Armed Forces Parade, which marked the end of the celebration, May 18.

Depot employees attended the Tobyhanna Veteran’s Council cake cutting ceremony on May 17.

The parade, like all of the other events, offered an opportunity for the local community to show their support and say thank you to service members and local veterans.

The annual event featured military vehicles, marching bands from local high schools, Pocono Raceway, the Boy and Girl Scouts, local fire and police units and veteran organizations. The procession started at Gino Merli Veterans Center and wound its way around the Scranton, ending at Mifflin Avenue. Static military equipment and vehicles were on display at the courthouse square.
