Local Economic Climate

Wheat, cattle and oil exploration are major industries. Enid is considered to be the retail trade and major medical center for northwestern Oklahoma. Vance AFB is the largest single employer in the area. Enid is part of Garfield County, which has an unemployment rate of 3.3. Average hourly rates for local jobs are: Secretary, $13.90; Registered Nurse, $27.50; Cashier, $8.93; Elementary Teacher, $19.49 (FT teacher salary, not substitute); Real Estate Agents $22.50; Tellers, $11.10.

Employment Opportunities on Base

On base employment opportunities include Civil Service, Non-appropriated funds, and various contractors. More specific information on openings, eligibility, etc. can be obtained through the Spouse Employment assistance office at the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Employment Assistance

The Airman and Family Readiness Center at Vance AFB provides employment assistance to all military members and their families. Programs and services include a comprehensive Discovery Center where job announcements, information on employers, occupational outlook, and training opportunities are posted. Computers with Internet access are available for use. Fax and copy machines are available on a limited basis.

The Airman & Family Readiness conducts employment workshops that discusses current local job opportunities, resume assistance, cover letters, interviewing, networking and other valuable information to provide spouses as well as military members with professional assistance in finding employment in Enid.

Before you get to Vance AFB contact the spouse employment program manager at 580-213-7087 to get started on your job hunt right away. You can also “like” the Vance Job Link page on Facebook to see job announcements sent to the Airman & Family Readiness Center.


Spouse Resources

Two financial aid programs are available for the spouse of the active duty member. Counseling for these programs is available from the Vance Airman & Family Readiness Center. Contact them at DSN 312-448-6330 or 580-213-6330.

Vance Scholarship Program

In conjunction with the local community, the Vance Scholarship Program provides textbook reimbursement to active duty military stationed at Vance up to $100 per course, maximum of $200 per semester, and maximum of $400 per fiscal year. Receipts for textbooks must be submitted with application. Active duty military, spouses of active duty military, adult children of active duty military that are claimed as a dependent, and DOD civilians are eligible for a scholarship up to 50% of tuition for a maximum of two courses. There is a maximum award amount of $300 per semester and a maximum award amount of $600 per fiscal year. Applicants must reside in Garfield county and classes must be taken within the city limits of Enid. Correspondence courses are not covered by this program.

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)

The Student Career Experience Program is a strong recruitment source for Federal agencies. Participation in this program enriches the educational process by giving students relevant job experiences and provides Federal employers with an opportunity to take an active role in developing their future workforce.
