WRAIR Researchers attend MHSRS 2019

Story by Samir Deshpande on 08/27/2019

Scientists from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research were excited to participate in the 2019 Military Health System Research Symposium in Kissimmee, Fl., with over 15 presentations, two moderated breakout sessions and approximately 90 posters. MHSRS is the Military Health System’s premier scientific meeting, serving as a collaborative environment for military and civilian researchers from around the world.

With representation from all three of WRAIR’s research centers of excellence, the Center for Infectious Disease Research, the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience and Center for Enabling Capabilities, topics ranged from vaccine trials and multidrug resistant organisms to Soldier resilience and blast and brain trauma research.

WRAIR is particularly proud to have received two awards during the meeting’s plenary session. Dr. Amy Adler, a clinical research psychologist at WRAIR’s CMPN received the 2019 MHSRS Distinguished Service Award for lifetime achievement in the research category of behavioral health and resilience research. Additionally, a team led by Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, director of WRAIR’s Emerging Infectious Diseases branch, won the award for outstanding research by a large team, for working with government, industry and academic partners to develop a Zika vaccine in an unprecedented 180 days.

MHSRS is an opportunity for WRAIR to highlight and celebrate their accomplishments, understand the current state of biomedical science, identify new opportunities for partnership and collaboration and ensure its mission remains oriented towards meeting the needs of Service Members.
