Understanding TSP & BRS Matching

Maximize Your Free Money

Under BRS, the DoD automatically contributes 1% of your base pay and matches up to 4% more. To get the full match, contribute at least 5% of your base pay. Contributing less than 5% means you're leaving free money on the table.

L Funds vs Individual Funds

Lifecycle (L) funds automatically rebalance from aggressive to conservative as your retirement date approaches. If you prefer hands-off investing, an L Fund matching your retirement year is the simplest approach. Individual fund selection gives you more control but requires periodic rebalancing.
