On the Radar
Tracking this week in military life, here's what's on the radar. As the government shutdown continues, military families are bracing for missed paychecks. October 1st was covered by previous funding, but if the shutdown extends past mid-October, the Department of War may be unable to process the October 15th pay. Military aid societies and credit unions are offering no-interest loans and other assistance to help families bridge the gap. You'll find a full guide to resources on mybaseguide.com. Meanwhile, the Pay Our Troops Act of 2026 is moving through Congress. Introduced by Representative Jen Kiggins, a Navy veteran, the bill would guarantee pay for all active duty members, reservists and the Coast Guard, regardless of a shutdown. After a pause due to the government shutdown, sports and after-school activities are back for military kids. DoDEA has lifted its shutdown suspension, allowing schools on bases in the U.S. and overseas to resume games, clubs and homecoming events. The Pentagon is exploring a first-of-its-kind plan, leasing parts of Camp Pendleton for commercial development. The 125,000-acre base spans 17 miles of California coastline, vital for Marine combat and amphibious training. Officials say training won't be affected, but details on who could lease the land or for how much remain unclear. And over on Veteran Life, Marine veteran Adam Driver is set to portray Air Force hero John Chapman, a combat controller who fought alone on a frozen Afghan mountain in 2002. Based on the book Alone at Dawn, the Ron Howard-directed film will bring Chapman's final heroic stand to the big screen. That's your briefing. Be sure to follow my base guide and Veteran Life so you never miss what's on the radar.
