When you hear the word Tootsie Roll, you most likely think of a gooey, log-shaped piece of chocolate-flavored candy perfectly wrapped up. But what you probably didn't know is that during the Korean War, these sweet treats saved the lives of thousands of U.S. Marines. December of 1950 brought the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, a freezing, desperate fight for U.S. Marines. Surrounded, outmanned, and running out of ammo, the Marines radioed for an emergency airdrop of 60mm mortar rounds using the codename Tootsie Roll, which the base took literally. When troops went to open the supply drop boxes, they were surprised to find them filled with thousands of actual frozen Tootsie Roll candies. The Marines were initially baffled, but later realized they had received a blessing in disguise. The freezing temperatures had led to vehicle fuel lines cracking, which left troops stranded. However, Marines were able to soften the candies in their mouths easily, using them as a putty to seal broken pipes. When the candy re-froze, the Marines were able to drive to safety. The Tootsie Roll truly saved lives that day, providing Marines with a sweet victory.
