FOR STUDENTS LOOKING FOR STEM EXPERIENCE, THE AEOP IS A MUST

By Buddy Blouin
Education is one of the most powerful weapons for anyone’s life or organization. The same is true for the U.S. Army. Our Soldiers’ bravery, grit, and selflessness are all important, but education plays a major part in why the American Armed Forces continue to be the best in the world. The Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) works to provide viable education through a range of STEM programs to a variety of ages.

An Overview of the Army Education Outreach Program

The AEOP may aim to increase literacy across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but it does so in a multitude of ways. No matter which branch of the military you look at, STEM continues to engrain itself further and further into the operations of our troops. For these reasons, it’s imperative for the Army to encourage citizens who may be eligible for service to become well-versed in the subjects. There are many opportunities available through AEOP. Here are some of the programs available to students beginning in kindergarten and working through graduate programs:

1. AEOP High School Apprenticeships

An AEOP high school apprenticeship provides high schoolers with one-on-one opportunities with researchers and mentors from universities or the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). On top of the learning experience from the apprenticeship, students also receive a stipend.

2. AEOP GEMS

Sponsored by the U.S. Army, Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is a summer STEM enrichment program offered by Army research labs and engineering centers for middle and high school students from grades 5 through 12.

3. AEOP Summer Programs

AEOP High School Summer Programs can be found throughout the season offering a variety of events, including symposiums, paid internships, Camp Invention, the Unite program, and more.

The Army STEM Program Provides Real-World Experiences

One of the issues facing many students today is the lack of real-world experience in their field. No matter how much you learn in the classroom, you must know how to use your knowledge through application. An AEOP internship is a great way to fill this gap by placing students into paid internships that apply STEM-related skills to the real world.

How To Check AEOP Application Status

If you or someone you know is applying for an AEOP High School Apprenticeship, you may be anxious to figure out where you stand in the application process. Regardless of your status, applications are considered “pending” until the beginning of April (or whenever the AEOP makes its selection). Those chosen will receive a notification. When your application closes, your application will be reviewed, and choices will be made regarding your acceptance.

Is AEOP Research Prestigious?

The participants of the USAEOP work with world-class engineers, scientists, and other thought leaders. Research conducted is applied to real-world STEM situations. Anyone accepted into the AEOP deserves incredible recognition for their initiative and participation. A variety of programs are available, including internships, activities, competitions, and more that enrich the lives of students while improving research in STEM.

Is AEOP Worth It?

While the cost of travel and lodging can be a bit much for some, AEOP apprenticeships and its other programs are great opportunities for students looking to grow their skills and/or pad their applications and resumes. The Army Ed program continues to pursue its objectives of a STEM-literate society, empowered educators, and a sustainable STEM educational infrastructure. Army programs such as AEOP continue to benefit the country in multiple ways. Not only is Army education helping build a more viable recruiting pool, but it’s helping individuals improve themselves with skills that can be used in and out of the U.S. military.
