ARMY FUTURES COMMAND ADVANCES TECH FOR SOLDIERS TODAY & TOMORROW

The military is comprised of many different branches but within each are a wide array of units, organizations, and initiatives that work together to keep America safe stateside and around the globe. One of the efforts to keep the United States on top of its technological advancements comes from the Army Futures Command. A mix of both Soldiers and civilians can be found in the Lone Star State helping to provide new innovative solutions as technology continues to advance. Although it has its headquarters in Texas, the reach and scope of its operations can be found worldwide. Learn more about the U.S. Army Futures Command, its mission, and how it's allowing the nation’s largest military branch to discover new breakthroughs for the battlefield.

What Is Army Futures Command?

Established in 2018, the Army Futures Command (AFC) continues to ensure that the Army remains technologically advanced and ready for future warfare, with the goal of achieving victory. The Army Futures Command in Austin, Texas, has a global presence and employs over 17,000 individuals with a mix of civilians and Soldiers making up its personnel. There are four major commands within the Army and AFC is one of them. The current focus is on three primary objectives: putting people first, designing for the Army's future in 2040, and delivering on Army 2030. To achieve these goals, the AFC is executing six critical functions:
  1. Researching the future operational environment
  2. Developing concepts
  3. Conducting experimentation
  4. Establishing requirements
  5. Integrating technologies
  6. Engaging with industry, academia, and multinational partners
The headquarters directorates, research laboratories, innovation hubs, and Cross-Functional Teams of the AFC are advancing the Army's six modernization priorities, which include:
  1. Long-range precision fires
  2. Next-generation combat vehicles
  3. Future vertical lift
  4. Air and missile defense
  5. Establishing and maintaining its network
  6. Soldier lethality
You’ll find that the United States Army Futures Command works closely with other members of the Army transformation enterprise to ensure a coordinated effort in strengthening the Army's ability to maintain future-readiness as an integrated team. By framing problems and solutions across the entire DOTMLPF-P (Doctrine, Organization, Training, Materiel, Leadership and Education, Personnel, Facilities, and Policy), the AFC leads the way for the branch in developing and maintaining the best solutions for keeping Soldiers safe and America strong.

Where the AFC Falls Within the Army

When looking at the Army Futures Command org chart, you’ll note that there is a plethora of experienced, determined individuals helping guide the intuitive with their leadership. Projects such as the Army Software Factory continue to thrive thanks to the diligence found within the AFC. Here are the leaders heading up the Army Futures Command organization chart as of this writing:
  • Gen. James E. Rainey serves as the AFC’s Commanding General.
  • CSM Brian A. Hester is the Command Sergeant Major within the organization.
  • LTG Ross Coffman is the Deputy Commanding General helping the AFC fulfill its mission.
  • LTG Thomas H. Todd, III holds the position of Deputy Commanding General for Acquisition and System and Chief Innovation Officer.
  • LTG D. Scott McKean provides his experience as Deputy Commanding General and Futures and Concepts Center Director.
  • MG John M. Epperly holds the position of Deputy Commanding General for the Army Futures Command.
  • BG Michelle M. T. Letcher is the Chief of Staff within the AFC.
  • CW5 Edwin De La Cruz Jr. rounds out the leadership team serving as Command Chief Warrant Officer 5.
In terms of the Army as a whole, you’ll find the Army Futures Command as one of the Army Commands along with the U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), and U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).
