FENTANYL LOLLIPOP MILITARY USAGE AND THE OVERALL OPIOID ISSUE

By Buddy Blouin
Since the 1990s, the opioid epidemic has been a negative reality for millions of Americans. There are those that struggle with addiction, others that have loved ones struggling, and more still that have passed on. Fentanyl usage in the military is no exception and the results are devastating. Everything from fentanyl lollipop military prescriptions turning into a full-blown addiction to an accidental military drug overdose because something has been laced or cut with the substance, the problem is unfortunately growing. It doesn’t matter which branch you serve in, drug use in the military is affecting the mental and physical health of troops in the American Armed Forces.

Fentanyl Lollipop Military Usage, Other Forms Can Be Deadly

Some people get them to help deal with pain. It’s no secret that being in the military can lead to injury due to the nature of the work. Others get them to deal with pain. Again, military life and our personal lives can bring on mental stress. But fentanyl lollipop military usage and usage of the substance in all forms is a problem. Actiq (fentanyl) lollipop abuse is an unfortunate problem throughout the military and overall, the drug itself poses a threat in its many forms. It’s easily accessible, cheap, and becoming easier and easier to find. A deadly combination leading to lethal consequences. As Senator Ed Markey, put things, “Our military is not immune to the opioid epidemic. We have lost countless service members to overdose, and if we fail to take action to protect those in uniform, we will lose countless more. The Department of Defense’s latest report underscores the urgency of this moment and our need to ensure access to quality care and treatment without stigma or shame.”

Both Civilian and Military Communities Are Affected by the Opioid Crisis

A military discharge for drug use is the least of everyone’s worries. As terrible as it may be, overdoses are the core issue that fentanyl continues to provide. Now, studies are showing that the growing problem in too many civilian communities is also affecting the U.S. military. Between 2017 and 2021, the United States Department of Defense reported there were 174 overdoses representing just over half of overall overdose cases. Fentanyl overdoses during that period went from 36% in 2017 to a whopping 88% in 2021. All branches were affected including the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. It’s worth noting, however, that in the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy, overall overdose deaths doubled in the same time period. Regardless of the drug of choice, drug overdoses in the military are clearly a challenge for leadership that is continuing to rear its ugly head. Thankfully, there have been strides made not only for awareness but towards helping those struggling receive the help they need to better themselves.
