THE FORT HUACHUCA MUSEUM HAS LOTS TO OFFER

By Buddy Blouin
The preservation of our history is important for many reasons, including remembering those who helped make this nation what it is today as well as learning from our past mistakes. No other museum embodies the responsibility of preserving the past quite like the Fort Huachuca Museum located within Fort Huachuca, an Army base in Arizona. The Ft. Huachuca Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artifacts that illustrate the history of the Fort and military operations throughout the Southwest. Since 1960, it's been home to thousands of important objects and documents, which are on display to showcase the Fort’s 135+ year history through a series of exhibits.

Buffalo Soldier Museum Fort Huachuca

There is no history of Fort Huachuca without recognizing the role played by the Buffalo Soldiers. Over the years, many different groups have come and gone, including the Horse Soldiers, Foot Soldiers, WWII Infantrymen, and engineers who served during the Korean War. Everyone is well represented, but there is a special highlight for the Buffalo Soldiers who also called Fort Huachuca home at one point. The Buffalo Soldiers at the Fort Huachuca Museum provide a unique look at a complex time in our nation’s history. It’s an unfortunate juxtaposition considering the Buffalo Soldiers were fighting to gain freedoms they should already have had, while the Native Americans were defending their homes. All around you, you’ll find hints and traces of the Natives that came before us, including the nearby cemetery, which is the final resting place of some. The story of the Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Huachuca and the Native Americans who were defending their lands can be found at the museum.
