12. Geronimo’s Grave

Dodge Hill Rd Fort Sill, OK The famous Apache and historical figure, Geronimo, is buried on the grounds at Fort Sill. His wife and daughter are buried with him. Its original site was not maintained but there’s a new plaque at the grave today. It’s a 15-minute drive as you enter Fort Sill, and you can get a map from the gate guard.

Soon, onlookers began filling out the audience and the Works Progress Administration built up the Holy City with proper buildings for set pieces. It was once a sacred site for the Native people of the area, and remains steeped in legend and lore. There’s plenty to explore around the area and it makes for some breathtakingly scenic hikes.

The home belonged to Mattie Beal, who was the second name to be picked in the land lottery of 1901 when the government began offering land to settlers in the area. She married Charles Payne, and the two of them ran successful businesses and contributed greatly to local culture and society.
