NORTH KOREAN CRUISE MISSILES TESTS RESUME, RAISING TENSIONS WITH THE U.S.

By Buddy Blouin

The testing of North Korean cruise missiles has sparked a response from the United States as both militaries flex their muscles in the Pacific. Prepared to use nuclear weapons if need be, North Korea is now voicing its displeasure on the U.S. delivering an aircraft carrier in South Korea as its own response after the tests.

North Korean Cruise Missiles Test Inspires U.S. Response as Tensions Rise

Anytime North Korean cruise missiles are tested, you can expect a response from the United States, which is why it’s no surprise the latest round has inspired the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson in the region.

The U.S. aircraft carrier was sent to Busan, South Korea, after North Korea launched test missiles. Both nations are flexing their powers, and once again, tensions are rising in the Pacific.

There hasn’t been an American aircraft carrier reported in South Korea since June 2024, and this change is sure to inspire an angry response from North Korea as a result.

Kim Jong Un and Trump No Longer as Close

While President Donald Trump may be willing to speak with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un doesn’t seem interested—for now.

There is still no direct response to Trump’s willingness to restore better diplomatic ties; however, with North Korea focused on supporting its ally during its war in Europe, working with the U.S. doesn’t feel like a feasible option at this time.

Despite meeting three times during Trump’s first term, economic sanctions derailed any real headway on how North Korea should handle its nuclear program to match American interests.

Experts do believe that if its current alignment with U.S. rivals in Europe doesn’t pan out, there could be an avenue for reconciliation, but until then, expect North Korean cruise missiles to undergo testing.

Kim Yo Jong Is Not Amused

It's not just the North Korean leader who is making headlines due to the tests. His sister, Kim Yo Jong, remains an influential figure in the country, warning that the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson and joint drills by the U.S. and South Korea are hostile acts against their nation.

Furthermore, she insisted that despite diplomacy efforts, due to these actions, military responses and increased weapons testing are not off of the table.

“The (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is also planning to carefully examine the option for increasing the actions threatening the security of the enemy at the strategic level to cope with the fact that the deployment of U.S. strategic assets in the Korean Peninsula has become a vicious habit and adversely affects the security of the DPRK,” she said, using her nation’s official name.

Why the North Korean Cruise Missiles Test Is Important

North Korea wants to continue its show of force to remain a thorn in the side of the U.S. and its allies in the region. Being a nuclear power is one of the nation’s top goals, hence the periodic, ongoing tests.

Responding with the USS Carl Vinson and its strike group showcases the ability of the U.S. and its allies to work together and defend against North Korean threats.

What the future holds is unclear, but it’s also not a big mystery, either. Previous incidents have seen North Korea responding with more missile testing.

Considering the nation is looking to prove its ability to counterattack threats while maintaining a nuclear operation, more of the same should be to come.

The North Korean cruise missile test marks the fourth event this year, proving that leadership remains committed to the full use of nuclear weapons.
