OFF-POST SCHOOLS

Youth in seventh through 12th grades living on post attend two off-post schools: Dent Middle School, which accommodates children in sixth through eighth grades, and Richland Northeast High School for ninth through 12th grades.

Both are Richland District Two schools and have earned numerous awards from various organizations to include the U.S. Department of Education.

Dent Middle School is a School of Promise Flagship winner and home to several innovative magnet programs. Dent partners with parents and community to provide a quality education in a supportive environment by providing relevant, challenging learning experiences to prepare students as responsible individuals and citizens.

Richland Northeast (RNE) High School encourages parental and community support, staff dedication to quality education and high standards. The goal at RNE is “to find the value in every student.”

For families living off post, the vast majority of military students attend school in Richland School District Two. There are several other districts that also serve military children. Visit the school liaison website for information on other surrounding districts.

GUIDELINES FOR ENROLLMENT

The following is a list of guidelines for enrollment in Richland School District Two:

• Students must reside in Richland School District Two’s zoning area with their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) to be eligible. Students must attend the school that serves their legal residence (unless in a magnet or expanded choice program).
• To ensure that students are qualified for enrollment, three items of proof of residency are required.
• All documentation presented must show the current month’s date and the parent or legal guardian’s name.
• Acceptable address verification documentation may include an electric bill, water bill, landline phone bill, rental lease, real estate purchase contract, or a cable or satellite bill.
• A copy of the student’s birth certificate must be presented for all kindergartners and first graders before their enrollment. Birth certificates may also be requested for students at any other grade level. To be eligible for enrollment, kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, and first-graders must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1.
• To be eligible for 4-year-old programs, a child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1. Hospital birth reports are not acceptable for this purpose. If necessary, duplicate birth certificates can be obtained from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Vital Records and Public Health Statistics Division at 2600 Bull St., Columbia, South Carolina, or a similar agency in the child’s state of birth.
• A valid South Carolina Certificate of Immunization must be presented for all students prior to their enrollment. Some schools will transfer other state records to the South Carolina form for you at the nurse’s office, or you can have them transferred at the immunization clinic at Moncrief Army Hospital. • Student’s Social Security number (optional).
• A previous report card and transfer sheet from the school the student is leaving. In the case of guardianship, a copy of the document establishing the guardian relationship must be filed at the Richland School District Two Administration Office, 6832 Brookfield Road, Columbia, SC 29206. Enrollment will not be permitted until the appropriate guardianship has been established and the document is on file. For deployment or extended TDY situations, a copy of the Family Care plan and of orders will fill this requirement.
• High schools will request a letter of discipline from previous school.

SCHOOL CHOICE AND MAGNET PROGRAMS

All Richland District Two students have the option of attending the school where they are zoned or may apply for the Expanded Choice programs or magnet options. During the application process, usually in January, students may apply to attend a school that is not zoned for their attendance area. Magnet programs are available at every grade level for science, technology, performing arts, single gender, classic education, health sciences, media, business and more.

In March, parents are notified whether students have been accepted into their selected program. Soldiers arriving after the cutoff date may apply for Expanded Choice up until the first day of school on a space-available basis. Parents must provide transportation for students attending a nonzoned school. For additional information, visit Richland Two’s website at www.richland2.org.

Students living on post may apply for school choice during the sixth grade for the seventh-grade year and any year after. On-post students may also apply for magnet programs during the fifth grade for the sixth-grade year and any year thereafter. MAGNETS AND TRANSFER OPTION

Requests for transfer from zoned school applications are submitted to the district registrar beginning April 15 for the upcoming year. Applications are based on child care or on other extenuating circumstances. Applications are also accepted for severe hardship cases anytime during the school year. Applications are available for download at the district’s website at www.richlandone.org. Additional links to other departments and registrar information are also listed. Parents must provide transportation.

For RD1 magnets, apply at the individual school. Information is available on the district and school website. Application due dates vary.

• Richland One Middle College — Tech school for grades 11 and 12 provides students hands-on experiences and the chance to gain free college credit while still in high school. For more information, visit www.richlandonemiddlecollege.com. This program is open to students in other districts as well.
