DO MOVERS TAKE APART FURNITURE WHEN PCSING?

By Buddy Blouin

For the most part, moving companies will take apart furniture for you. It’s a great resource during a stressful time and can make PCSing that much easier as a result. However, every moving company is different as is everyone’s needs. Be sure to research different companies, understand your options, and decide what best fits your needs when moving.

Pros and Cons of Letting Movers Take Apart Your Own Furniture

Some pieces of furniture will need to come apart no matter what you do when PCSing and having movers take on the task can be helpful. However, it’s always good to weigh your options before committing:

Pros

Movers are professionals and letting them take apart your furniture before moving can help you reduce the risk of damage, maximize your moving truck space, and make the entire move that much easier.

These services are particularly helpful if you have small hallways, doorways, or areas to navigate and/or complex, large, and/or delicate pieces of furniture.

Cons

On the other hand, nobody handles items with care like someone who has worked for them and cherishes them.

Furthermore, you’ll know your property better than anyone and may do a better job understanding tight corners and small hallways. Nothing takes on more damage than door frames and hallways.

Taking apart your own furniture ahead of time can help the movers get to work faster once they arrive, saving you money when PCSing.

Do Movers Break Down Beds?

One of the most common types of furniture that needs to be disassembled is bed frames. They’re bulky, complex, and difficult to move, and fortunately, movers will take them apart for you.

Other Furniture Items That Can Be Disassembled

Sofas and beds are common items that can require disassembly but there are many others that movers may be able to help take apart and get you to your new home. This includes the following:

  • Bookshelves

  • Build-it-yourself items (outdoor tables, TV stands, etc.)

  • Cabinets

  • Dressers

  • Instruments (brass, percussion, pianos, woodwinds, etc.)

  • Tables

  • Vanities

Should You Let Movers Take Apart Your Furniture?

If you have complex, heavy, or delicate furniture, letting movers take the lead can be helpful.

It’s also important to remember safety during your move to ensure you aren’t hurt or have damaged personal property. If movers are the safer choice, then this can be very important to consider during your PCS.

Fragile furniture is also at risk of damage when loading, so letting professionals take over can be a safe bet.

You’re also going to need the right tools and likely a variety of tools to take furniture apart correctly. Tools professionals have on hand.

Ultimately, if you can find affordable movers that take apart furniture for you and avoid safety concerns or damaging your belongings, these services are a great way to get the job done while eliminating stress during the PCS process.
