Understanding BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing)
Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a U.S. military benefit that helps service members pay for housing when government quarters are not provided. BAH rates are determined by location, pay grade, and dependency status.
How BAH Rates Are Calculated
The Department of Defense calculates BAH rates annually based on local housing costs in each Military Housing Area (MHA). Rates consider median rental prices for appropriate housing types based on pay grade and family size.
2026 BAH Rate Changes
BAH rates for 2026 have been updated to reflect current housing market conditions. Rates may increase or decrease compared to previous years depending on local market trends in your MHA.
With Dependents vs. Without Dependents
Service members with dependents (spouse, children, or other qualifying dependents) receive higher BAH rates to account for the additional housing space needed. The difference between with and without dependents rates varies by location.
