Understanding the ASVAB
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a timed, multi-aptitude test used by every branch of the U.S. military. It measures your strengths and weaknesses across academic and technical areas, determining both your eligibility to enlist and which jobs you qualify for.
AFQT vs. Line Scores
Your AFQT score (Armed Forces Qualification Test) comes from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. This is the score that determines whether you can enlist. Your line scores come from various combinations of all subtests and determine which jobs you can choose.

Study Tips
Focus on Arithmetic Reasoning and Word Knowledge first — these have the biggest impact on your AFQT. Take a practice test early to identify weak areas, then use targeted study. Give yourself at least 4-8 weeks. Free practice tests are available at officialasvab.com.
