Understanding Your PCS Entitlements
A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move is one of the biggest financial events in military life. The government provides several entitlements to help offset the cost, but understanding what you qualify for — and how much — requires piecing together information from multiple sources.
DLA: Your Moving Expense Cushion
The Dislocation Allowance is a flat-rate payment that partially covers expenses the military doesn't directly reimburse — security deposits, utility hookups, cleaning fees, replacing household items that didn't survive the move, and other incidentals. It's paid once per PCS and varies by rank and whether you have dependents. You can request it as an advance before your move.
PPM vs. Government Move: Which Is Better?
With a government move, the military hires a contractor to pack, ship, and deliver your household goods. You don't pay anything (within your weight limit), but you also don't receive any extra money. With a PPM (Personally Procured Move, formerly DITY), you move your own stuff and the government reimburses you 100% of what they would have paid the contractor. If you can move for less than that amount — renting a truck, enlisting friends, driving yourself — you keep the difference tax-free. The trade-off: more work, more planning, but potentially thousands in profit.
Don't Forget TLE
Temporary Lodging Expense covers up to 14 days of hotel and meals at your old and/or new station while you wait for housing. Many families forget to claim this — it can be worth $1,000+ depending on family size. Keep all receipts. For overseas moves, TLA (Temporary Lodging Allowance) can cover even longer stays.
