Military-to-Civilian Career Transition

Understanding the O*NET Crosswalk

The Department of Labor's O*NET system maps military occupations to their closest civilian equivalents using Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes. Each military job is matched based on tasks, skills, knowledge, and abilities required. While the crosswalk provides strong starting points, many veterans successfully pivot to careers beyond their direct match.

Bridging the Certification Gap

Many civilian careers require specific certifications or licenses that military training alone may not fulfill. Programs like DoD SkillBridge allow service members to work with civilian employers for up to 180 days before separation. The VA's Credentialing Assistance program can fund certification exams, and many states offer expedited or reciprocal licensing for veterans.

Federal Hiring Advantage

Under 5 U.S.C. § 2108, eligible veterans receive either 5-point or 10-point preference in federal competitive hiring. The Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA) and 30% or More Disabled Veteran authorities provide additional non-competitive pathways.

Disclaimer: Salary data reflects national median wages from BLS OEWS (May 2025) and varies by location, experience, and employer. Certification requirements differ by state. Contact your TAP office or VA Vocational Rehabilitation counselor for tailored guidance.
