Introduction

Fort Huachuca is in Cochise County, Arizona, just 15 miles north of the Mexican border. The post was founded in 1877 during the Apache Wars and was the host location of the Buffalo Soldiers from 1913-1933. Today, close to 20,000 people live at work at Fort Huachuca. Units stationed here include the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, the Military Auxiliary Radio System, the Network Enterprise Technology Command, and the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade. How to Get to Fort Huachuca

Fort Huachuca is 6.8 miles south of Huachuca City and 23 miles southwest of Tombstone.

Driving Directions

If you’re driving in from the north, following I-90 S will be your best bet.

Flights to Fort Huachuca

The Sierra Vista Municipal Airport is so close to the post that the two installations share runways. It’s a very small airport that serves limited flights, but getting from here to post is extremely easy.

Greyhound Bus

The closest Greyhound station is in Sierra Vista as well, and from there it’s a mere 15 minutes or less to post by car.

Entering Fort Huachuca and Post Amenities

Make sure to bring all the necessary identification along with you when you first arrive at Fort Huachuca. You’ll need to show your driver’s license and registration at the gate if you’re coming by car. If you’re driving a rental, then the rental agreement will also work. It’s a good idea to double check the documents you’re going to need before you hit the road.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

When you first enter through the gate, you’ll need to report to your individual command and present your orders. They’ll tell you what your next steps are and get you settled in.

DEERS Fort Huachuca

Make an appointment with the DEERS office to obtain your ID card or get a replacement. Any family members living with you will also need to apply for their dependent ID cards through the DEERS office. You’ll need to show supporting documents like any promotion orders and two forms of ID, to be approved.

Where to Live Near Fort Huachuca?

If you’re considering living on post, check out the available on-post housing options. Otherwise, read on to find out more about living in the surrounding areas. There are quite a few options near the post where one could settle down. There are some modest-sized cities and a lot of open land. You’ll need to look through all your options before finding something that suits you, but it shouldn’t be too difficult due to the range of available communities for individuals and families.

Cities Near Fort Huachuca

The closest city to post is Sierra Vista, since the Fort is technically within city limits, and the city center is just under 15 minutes away by car. Other cities nearby are Bisbee and Tombstone.

Best Places to Live Near Fort Huachuca

Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista is a decent-sized city with a population of more than 43,000. There are a handful of historic archeological sites in the area that are related to early human activity, including the Mammoth-Kill landmark. At the end of the Apache Wars, the city began to receive settlers who built up the local economy. The Fort is a large part of Sierra Vista’s GDP, but other industries include a booming retail sphere, science, and technology sectors.

Tombstone

Tombstone is a historic American city located in Cochise County. It sits 23 miles northwest of the post. The city was rocketed into popular culture as the site of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral between allies of Wyatt Earp and allies of the Clanton gang. It’s been a vision of the old west ever since. The population today is just 1,300 inside of the 10 square mile limits. Because of its heavy tourism industry, there are numerous groups of reenactors and companies that work in the entertainment sector.

Huachuca City

Not an actual city, Huachuca City is a town just north of post with a population of 1,800. It’s home to a lot of people who work at Fort Huachuca, as well as those employed in the neighboring cities of Sierra Vista and Tombstone.

Lowell

Lowell is a small nearby town at an elevation of around 5,075 feet. It has a scenic downtown almost frozen in time. It was once a mining town pulling in immigrants from all over the world. Lowell is worth checking out if you enjoy a quiet home living inside an area with a historic past that’s plain everywhere you look.

Bisbee

Bisbee is the county seat of Cochise County. It has a population of around 5,500 people. This is another former mining town with the main drag right out of a Western film. Tourism is a main part of the economy these days, and John Wayne was often spotted here in his day. Summers here are hot and dry, and the temperature can rise into the 90s and even the low 100s on rare occasions. You won’t see much precipitation year round, but it’ll be partially cloudy a good amount of the time. The wettest part of the year comes at the end of July. Winter’s temps can drop below 40 degrees, though it isn’t likely.
