ARMY RECRUITMENT IN 2025 SEES A SURGE AS BRANCH HITS HALFWAY GOAL FOR THE YEAR
Army recruitment in 2025 is off to a tremendous start and has reached almost half of its goal for the fiscal year. The military needs more Soldiers as recruitment efforts have faced a number of roadblocks over the last several years deterring potential volunteers. Now, better recruitment conditions are in play and the Army is improving its efforts as a result.
Army Recruitment 2025: Nearly Halfway to Its Goal Already
The Army recruitment goal for 2025 is 61,000 new active-duty Soldiers. In January 2025, there are already 30,000 new enlistments for the military’s largest branch.
This is better than last year, featuring 6,000 more Soldiers than the same period for 2024; however, it’s important to keep things in perspective.
While the 2025 Army recruitment numbers are impressive, the force operates on a fiscal year cycle that begins on October 1st annually. Therefore, these figures have been a part of FY25, which began months ago.
With that being said, it’s still an impressive feat showing improvement and fulfilling nearly 50% of its goal in only a quarter—more or less—of FY25.
Recruitment Woes and New Leadership
The Pentagon and politicians have been looking for answers to improve the efforts of Army Recruiters for years now but this stroke of good fortune comes right as Donald Trump is set to take his place in the oval office for a second term as POTUS.
Pete Hegseth is the man picked by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Secretary of Defense and has pointed to recruiting as a core focus under his leadership.
Despite the lack of formal evidence, Hegseth and others in Trump’s administration have blamed cultural and political issues for the reason the Army has struggled with its recruitment efforts in recent years.
Though likely somewhat a factor, the simple truth is that many prospects who would theoretically qualify as Soldiers don’t due to failing to meet academic or body fat standards maintained by the force.
Evidence of this includes the Army initiating its Future Soldier Preparatory Courses in 2022. These training camps helped potential recruits meet the Army’s standards so that they could qualify when it was time to formally enlist.
Around 13,750 Soldiers would have been ineligible to serve last year if not for taking one of the Future Soldier Preparatory Courses—a clear connection that helped the Army meet its goal for the first time in years.
So far, the courses have proved to be powerful resources helping recruits find help with exercise and tutoring during a time when the United States faces elevated obesity and education scores dropping to their lowest in decades.
Delayed-Entry Boosting Numbers
Part of the reason Army recruitment in 2025 is working is due to the branch’s delayed-entry program.
There are around 11,000 recruits, which is double the numbers seen in 2024, who volunteered last year to delay going to boot camp until this year. By doing so, their enlistment is now being officially counted.
The large delayed-entry pool is partly because the service lacks space for basic training, having allocated some to Future Soldier Preparatory Courses.
Furthermore, persistent delays in medical processing have led officials to increase staff and adopt a more lenient stance on minor medical histories unlikely to impact military performance.
Army Recruitment in 2025 Is Embracing Change
There have been ongoing issues recruiters have brought to the attention of leadership but have sadly not been rectified.
For example, the ongoing problem of enlistment delays that could take months after recovering from smaller conditions or injuries causing potential new Soldiers to walk away from the branch altogether.
However, now, the Army is using new strategies to help empower those on the ground looking for the next generation of warfighters.
This includes also allowing Soldiers the opportunity to choose their initial duty station, which has proved to be popular, especially when considering many bases provide attractive job opportunities near the hometowns of recruits.
Army recruitment in 2025 still has a long way to go but its promising start looks like the branch will be safely on its way to hitting its goal thanks to changing conditions, improved resources, and leadership listening to the concerns of recruiters.
