CYBER CENTER FORT GORDON: THE HOME OF U.S. CYBER EXCELLENCE

By Buddy Blouin
The importance of cybersecurity continues to rise. America has more and more devices that are connected online through wired Internet connections, 5G, fixed wireless connections, etc. The more devices that are connected and the more applications in use, the more access points there are for those who wish to do harm. This creates a growing online security problem that is compounded by the fact that technology is becoming more accessible and sensitive information is used in more and more ways. The Cyber Center Fort Gordon continues to train U.S. Soldiers on the latest technological threats to American interests. At the Fort Gordon Cyber Center of Excellence (CCoE), Soldiers learn how to help protect communications, assess and prevent threats, and engage in electronic warfare (EW). How Cyber Center Fort Gordon Protects the U.S.

The Department of Defense (DoD) depends on troops of all branches to help defend American Forces and the public at large from cyber attacks. Our communications continue to be an area of emphasis, as evidenced by the increase in encouraging STEM-related careers as well as the formation of the newest branch of the American Armed Forces, the U.S. Space Force (USSF). Fort Gordon continues its tradition of innovation and training to make sure that Soldiers are ready to defend against cyberattacks and other disruptions to communications. On the battlefield, comms are critical to making sure that objectives are met and missions completed. There is a wide range of EW threats that can affect everything from simple communications to detecting threats such as enemy forces and incoming missiles. There isn’t an aspect of our modern military that isn’t affected by communications, and the CCoE helps prepare those who are serving around the world to keep threats at bay and lines of communication open. Those who receive training through cyber awareness are prepared to work in a range of fields related to cybersecurity and defending the electromagnetic spectrum used to help radios and other devices communicate. Education through the Fort Gordon Cyber Security Training Center can help those who undertake the challenge in their military career and well beyond.

How Long Is Cyber Awareness Certificate Good For?

The Army requires Cybersecurity Fundamentals training to be completed every three years. This course can be located on the Cybersecurity Training Center website. Personnel employed in cybersecurity who have finished the Cybersecurity Fundamentals course offered on the Cybersecurity Training Center website can earn 40 CE units/continuing education credits. These include Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) certification, Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) Security+ CE, CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) CE certifications, and Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC).

The Cyber Awareness Challenge Pushes Students

Every year, the Cyber Center at Fort Gordon hosts a Cyber Awareness Challenge that continues to inspire students to push themselves and compete in the world of cybersecurity. Such competitions hone students’ skills and improve the capabilities of those who are working to defend America from cyber attacks. The Cyber Awareness Challenge aims to influence behavior by focusing on actions authorized users should take to limit threats and vulnerabilities to DoD Information Systems. User-focused training that is current, engaging, and relevant, once again, shows how the Cyber Center Fort Gordon continues to lead the way in securing communications for America.
