Introduction
Welcome to the home of the Air Commandos since 1961! Hurlburt Field supports the 1st Special Operations Wing, Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command, an Air Force major command, and a number of associate units. It’s a great place to live and work. The 1st SOW boasts a 29-squadron wing, capable of deploying and sustaining a fight anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. The AFSOC is America’s specialized air power. It provides Air Force Special Operations Forces for worldwide deployment and assignment to regional unified commands throughout the spectrum of conflict. The base employs more than 8,500 active duty personnel, 32,000 retirees, 1,200 civilian personnel and about 10,000 family members. Public Transportation
There are no Amtrak stops in the Florida Panhandle or near Hurlburt Field. Alternatively, you could take a Greyhound bus from Fort Walton Beach and connect to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Pensacola and most other major cities on the East Coast and in the South.Flights to Hurlburt Field, FL
The closest airport to Hurlburt Field is Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. It’s about 15 miles from the front gates of Hurlburt Field. - If you drive from the airport, you will get on Eglin Parkway/Florida Route 85.
- Take a slight right onto Lewis Turner Boulevard/Florida Route 189.

- Go straight onto Independence Road.
- Take a right onto Tully Street.

Entering Hurlburt Field and Base Amenities

Upon arrival, all permanently assigned personnel report to the Commando Welcome Center with copies of orders and receipts for travel vouchers. The Commando Welcome Center is the one-stop shop to welcome new commandos to Hurlburt Field. Upon arrival, inbound members will be escorted to the Hurlburt Welcome Center by their sponsor during their appointment time. There are many options for your child's education near Hurlburt Field. The state offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local daycares and child care programs on and off base. Children who live on base attend schools in the Okaloosa or Santa Rosa school district.
