‘THE WOMAN KING’ HIGHLIGHTS REAL-LIFE STRENGTH OF WOMEN IN THE MILITARY

The Woman King is a historical epic based on true events that occurred in the Kingdom of Dahomey. It’s directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and was written by Maria Bello and Dana Stevens. Grammy- and Emmy-award-winning actress Viola Davis stars in the movie alongside stars Lashana Lynch and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The Woman King will highlight real-life stories and events of strong women warriors. It’s a must-see for all military and action movie fans!

The Woman King focuses on true events that happened in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states in Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Kingdom of Dahomey was located in what is presently known as Benin (a West African country). The movie follows major historical events surrounding the group of female warriors known as the Agojie. The Agojie warriors protected the Kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th century to the 19th century. They were also sometimes referred to as the Dahomey Amazons. While their origins are not completely known or documented, the Agojie likely came about under the ruling of Houegbadja. The woman warriors built up their defense in large numbers. There were around 6,000 women in the army by the 19th century. Some of the warriors were those who chose to join, and they would undergo hard training to get into shape for battle and get ready for war. The Woman King movie exemplifies strong female characters. It focuses on the female warrior group and how they protected the Kingdom of Dahomey from invading colonists in the 1800s. The movie showcases the all-female army in a heroic light, accurately conveying the Agojie’s reputation as a fearless defense from any threats to the Kingdom of Dahomey.‘The Woman King’ Cast
One of the main characters, Nanisca, is played by award-winning actress Viola Davis. The Woman King has a large cast of talented women that includes Sheila Atim as Amenza, Shaina West as Esi, and Thuso Mbedu as Nawi. The trailer was released by Sony Pictures Entertainment in early July. It displays the strong female cast and a bit of the beautiful cinematography we’re sure to see more of when the movie releases.
