Welcome to the U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu, Hawaii, located on Oahu, the most populated of the Hawaiian Islands, with nearly one million residents. More specifically, USCG Base Honolulu sits on Sand Island, a tiny 500-acre island off Oahu’s southern coast. Per the USCG Honolulu website, their mission is to “deliver integrated mission support during routine and contingency operations throughout the Fourteenth District area of responsibility.”

Where Is US Coast Guard Base Honolulu?

This address is the base's main hub, home to everything from the Coast Guard Exchange to the Coast Guard recruiter. Honolulu is home to many military installations, but if you need anything Coast Guard-related, this is your best place to start.

When moving here, you will almost certainly travel through Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport… that is, unless you’re an excellent swimmer! The base is a short, 5-mile drive from the airport.

1. Take Aolele St. and, in 1.3 miles, turn left onto Lagoon Dr. 2. In 0.2 miles, turn right on N Nimitz Hwy. E. 3. In 1 mile, take a slight right onto Sand Island Access Rd. 4. The destination will be on your left in 2.5 miles.

Check-In Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Check-in procedures vary for all military installations, but a good rule of thumb is to make sure you have all relevant documents – such as orders and proper identification – for you and any dependents traveling with you to the base. Where Should I Live Near USCG Base Honolulu?

Major Cities Near U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu

The base is located in Honolulu, the most populated city among all the Hawaiian islands, with just under 350,000 people. That makes up roughly 35% of Oahu’s population and is 300,000 more people than that state’s second-largest city, East Honolulu. There’s a good chance that between work, amenities, and recreation, you’ll spend much of your time in Honolulu, even if you live in an adjacent city.

Best Places to Live Near U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu

Pearl City

Honolulu is the most convenient city to call home, as it’s close to base. Another good option, though, is Pearl City. After Honolulu proper and East Honolulu, it’s the third largest Hawaiian city. As you might suspect, it’s adjacent to Pearl Harbor.

Pearl City is a good central hub to the southern, more populated part of Hawaii. If you live here, it’s a short drive to Honolulu to the southeast or Wahiawa to the northwest, which is close to Schofield Barracks and the military amenities there. Another Pearl City benefit is it’s a shorter drive if you want to cut through to the other side of the island, such as Haleiwa and the famed North Shore Beach.

U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu Schools

There are four public school districts serving Oahu: Honolulu School District, Central School District, Leeward School District, and Windward School District. Since you can reasonably live anywhere on the island and still work the Honolulu base, the school you send your child to will depend on your residence. However, if you wish to enroll your child in a district different than the one you reside in, you may file a “Request for Geographic Exception” that will be reviewed by the Department of Education. This request may be filed at either your child’s home school or the school they wish to attend.

Since Honolulu has the densest population on the island, there’s a good chance you’ll send your child to the Honolulu School District. The closest elementary school to base is Pu’uhale. From there, they’d likely go to Kalakaua Middle School and then Farrington High School to complete their education.

Honolulu Year-Round Weather

There are many reasons why Hawaii, in general, is one of the top travel destinations in the world, but the weather is certainly one of the biggest factors. If you live in, say, North Dakota and it’s the dead of winter, you can head to the Islands for a few days to thaw out because it’s guaranteed to be warm all year. There will be humidity, and many days are muggy, but it doesn’t often rise to the level of “oppressive.” Plus, the ocean breeze provides constant relief.

There’s not much seasonal variety in Oahu; Honolulu weather in March is like Honolulu weather in December. The warmest month, August, sees average daily highs of 87 degrees and overnight lows of 76. The coolest month, January, has daily highs of 79 and lows of 73. As you can see, every day brings sunscreen weather. This is a drawback if you like seasons, but at least you’ll be comfortable.

Rain is common and falls throughout the year, but it’s not often in long spurts, and you can thank that rain for the lush vegetation on the island. The rainiest month, January, still only receives 2.4 inches on average. Obviously, snow isn’t something you ever have to think about.

Things to Do on U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu

If you’re one to kick it outdoors, Hawaii is home to some of the most beautiful and world-famous beaches for you to enjoy. If you’re a sportsman, Honolulu offers some of the best golfing in the world, as well as plenty of hiking trails and nature to explore, not to mention surfing, snorkeling, or scuba diving.

If you like museums, Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a short drive away. Kids will love spending a few hours at the Dole Plantation. And since Hawaii is a cultural melting pot, you can treat yourself to some of the best cuisine in the world, whether you want high-end dining or grab & go street food.
