NAVAL STATION NEWPORT: IN-DEPTH WELCOME CENTER
Introduction
Welcome to Naval Station Newport, just outside historic Newport, Rhode Island! In the cradle of the American Revolution, the commander of the first Continental Navy, Rhode Islander Esek Hopkins, used the Narragansett Bay as a haven for his small fleet. During the Civil War, Newport was the temporary site of the US Naval Academy to avoid the capture of its cadets by the Confederates. The base was formally established in 1869 and rose to importance in World War II where it produced 80% of American torpedos. WWII was when it became a major training base and was the site where John F Kennedy attended the training. The base is now the site of the Navy’s Center of Learning Excellence. It serves as the premier training site for officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted, midshipman as well as undersea warfare and development systems. The base covers 1,339 acres of the western shore of Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island. It is home to 8,000 personnel who make up the 50 Navy, Marine Corps, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, and NOAA commands as well as the 17,000 students who pass through training and education programs annually.
