Introduction
Welcome to your new home connected to the 75th Air Base Wing at Hill Air Force Base! Hill AFB supports the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, Air Force active duty 388th and Reserve 419th Fighter Wings and more than 50 mission partners It’s a great place to live and work as it provides Air Force-wide, depot-level overhaul and repair support, which is essential to ensuring the proper execution of Air Force operations. The base employs more than 27,000 active duty personnel, civilians and contractors, and oversees about 1,000,000 acres and more than 1,700 facilities in northern Utah, just south of Ogden. The military installation traces its roots back to 1934 when the operation of a temporary Air Corps depot in Salt Lake City, in place to support airmail operations, brought attention to senior military and civilian leaders, leading them to believe this area could be a possible site for a permanent air depot. Less than five years later Congress appropriated the funds for the establishment and construction of the Ogden Air Depot. Hill Field officially opened in November 1940. Layton, UT
The most populous city in Davis County, Layton counts more than 77,000 residents within its 22 square miles. It is 25 miles north of Salt Lake City, and less than four miles from Hill AFB’s South Gate. Originally an adjunct to Kaysville, after years of controversy over Kaysville City taxes (and Kaysville limiting dog ownership to two per household), in March 1902 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Layton’s right to cast off its neighbor, and it incorporated in 1920. Today, Layton is a rapidly growing community, and Hill AFB greatly influences that growth. The city has a regional shopping mall, a state-of-the-art hospital and more than 500 acres of open space with 15 parks, trails, playgrounds and athletic fields and courts to entice residents into the great outdoors.Ogden, UT
As the locals say: You can’t get anywhere without coming to Ogden. The city at the base of the Wasatch Mountains covers a little over 27 square miles between the Ogden and Weber rivers and has about 88,000 residents. The city’s history is rooted to a way station, Fort Buenaventura, established in 1846 by a trapper on the banks of the Weber River near what is now downtown Ogden. Today, Ogden residents enjoy a rare combination of urban and mountain living. In 2016, Forbes ranked Ogden as the second-best city in the U.S. for raising a family based on its low crime, light traffic, vibrant young population and homeownership. A booming outdoor recreational industry gives residents outstanding access to the area’s natural amenities.Sunset, UT
The residential community of Sunset lies 10 miles south of Ogden at the north end of Davis County. Hill Air Force Base is directly east, Weber County is to the north and Clearfield to the south, with the Union Pacific Railroad running along the city’s western margin. Originally pasturage for Mormon pioneers to graze their animals, Sunset incorporated in 1935 and refocused as a residential community in the 1940s as the U.S. government was developing Hill Air Force Base. At just 1.31 square miles, Sunset is nearly fully developed with just over 5,300 residents.Hot Tip: Look for Hill Air Force Base homes and apartments for rent or sale, and find BAH, PCS, TLA & ETS military housing information at AHRN.com.
