1918
Kuwa’ahoe Military Reservation Established
The U.S. military history of Mokapu Peninsula began in 1918 when the eastern shore of the peninsula was commissioned as Kuwa’ahoe Military Reservation, later renamed Fort Hase. The peninsula’s strategic position on windward Oahu made it valuable for coastal defense.
1938
NAS Kaneohe Development Begins
The U.S. Navy started development of the western side of Mokapu Peninsula in 1938 as Naval Air Station Kaneohe, establishing the seaplane and patrol aviation base that would play a critical role in Pacific defense in the years leading up to World War II.
1941
Pearl Harbor Attack and Medal of Honor
During the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Kaneohe-based sailor John Finn shot down one of the first Japanese planes and was later cited for his heroic actions. He became one of the first Medal of Honor recipients during World War II.
1952
MCAS Kaneohe Bay Commissioned
On Jan. 15, 1952, Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay was commissioned after the Marines negotiated control of the former naval air station. The air station played an integral part in supporting American military efforts throughout the Pacific between 1965 and the early 1990s.
1994
MCB Hawaii Consolidation
In April 1994, the Marine Corps consolidated all of its Hawaii installations and facilities under a single command — Marine Corps Base Hawaii, headquartered at Kaneohe Bay. That October, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade was deactivated and several units redesignated as tenants under III Marine Expeditionary Force, Hawaii.
