ARMY PT UNIFORM REGULATIONS: NEW STYLES COMING IN 2025

By Buddy Blouin

The Army Physical Fitness Uniform aka Army PT uniform is an iconic look for any Soldier training, exercising, or engaging in similar activity. Focusing on less flash and more substance, the look is sleek, yet memorable. Now, there are more options coming for troops.

What Is the Army PT Uniform?

The Army PT uniform is used by Soldiers while working out. They may also be worn during drills or when off-duty if the activities are active in nature.

Each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and their auxiliaries use PT uniforms in a similar fashion.

Keep in mind that while Army PT uniforms must match across units, there are times when custom T-shirts are allowed depending on the event. However, they are still branded as Army.

New designs are in the preliminary stages with more options for Soldiers becoming available after they are designed in 2025.

How to Wear Army PT Uniform

Understanding how the Army PT uniform regulation works comes down to remembering a few things:

  • What you can wear may vary depending on the temperature.

  • There are some areas of leeway and additional options being added to help humanize Soldiers.

Exceptions may apply but even when they don’t, Soldiers can avoid issues by referring to their handbooks and Commanding Officers (COs).

Warm Weather

  • A black shirt that is either short or long-sleeved with “Army” in gold across the chest.

  • Black shorts with “Army” in gold written on the left leg. Soldiers may wear plain black spandex underneath if they wish.

Cold Weather

  • A black, fleece hat that can cover your ears but not your eyebrows.

  • A black and gold jacket featuring the gold Army logo. Keep in mind that the sleeves should be down at all times when worn as a complete uniform.

  • Black gloves are allowed.

  • Black pants with the gold Army logo. Pants legs must also remain down when worn as a complete uniform.

To learn more about what’s allowed in colder temperatures, be sure to refer to the Army PT uniform weather chart for additional guidelines.

Earrings and Headphones

Female Soldiers are allowed to wear earrings with a variety of uniforms, however, the US Army PT uniform is not mentioned. It’s probably a good idea to ask your CO before exercising to understand where your unit stands.

As for headphones, there are instances in which units or your CO may not allow for their use.

If these restrictions don’t exist, wireless or non-wireless devices and earpieces, are allowed while wearing the Army PT uniform when exercising in indoor gyms or fitness centers.

However, Soldiers can’t use headphones during the Army Physical Fitness Test.

Furthermore, the use of headphones isn’t allowed, even around the neck or attached to your uniform, in areas outside of indoor gyms or fitness centers.

You can’t wear just any headphones as they need to be discreet and 1.5 inches in diameter or smaller.

Armbands to carry electronic devices are also allowed in gyms and fitness centers but they must be black and are not allowed to be used outside of these permitted areas.

New Army PT Uniform Options Being Designed in 2025

The Army isn't replacing its current PT uniforms but will soon offer optional gear designed for better comfort and performance while keeping its organized look.

Soldiers can choose upgraded items like shorts and shirts, similar to how they select approved boots, once the redesign is complete.

A redesigned PT kit, set to roll out in 2025, was announced by Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer.

The current black and gold PT uniform is not being replaced; however, the attempt by the Army to help Soldiers enjoy more options hasn’t been met with a completely positive reception.

Critics are pointing to more pressing issues, including barracks conditions and dining facilities that are affecting service for Soldiers.

How the Army PT uniform continues to evolve is still yet to be seen but as more regulations roll out, it’s clear that Soldiers will have more options at their disposal when getting in some exercise.
