About Fort Shafter

Aloha and welcome to Fort Shafter, the headquarters of the U.S. Army Pacific Command. This military installation located in Honolulu, Hawaii, commands most Army forces in the Asia-Pacific region with the exception of Korea. It’s a beautiful place to live and work, with a long history that dates back over 100 years, making it the oldest military base on Oahu. Construction began in 1905 on the former Hawaiian crown lands that were ceded to the United States government after annexation. When the post opened in 1907, it was named for Maj. Gen. William Rufus Shafter, who led the United States expedition to Cuba in 1898. Today, the post sits 8 miles west of Honolulu, just a few miles from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
