U.S. Coast Guard Base Honolulu delivers integrated mission support during routine and contingency operations throughout its area of responsibility. The 14th District's boundaries stretch from the Hawaiian Islands across most of the Central and Western Pacific, with the district commander overseeing 25 operational units ashore and afloat. The base supports more than 1,150 active-duty, 150 Reserve, 80 civilian, and 400 auxiliary personnel covering more than 12.2 million square miles of land and sea.

The Coast Guard's presence in Hawaii supports maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection, and port security across the vast central Pacific. Coast Guard District 14, headquartered in Honolulu, oversees operations covering millions of square miles of ocean. 1939

Pier 4 Depot Acquired

The Coast Guard acquired Pier 4 and a 5-acre plot on Sand Island when it absorbed the U.S. Lighthouse Service, establishing the foundation for today's base.

1945

Base Sand Island Established

An additional 5 acres were acquired and Base Sand Island was formally established. Its primary mission of buoy repair was expanded to include industrial, shipping and receiving support.

1988

Sector/Base Honolulu Created

Base Sand Island became Sector/Base Honolulu, taking on added responsibility for search and rescue and law enforcement throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

1996

Base and Sector Separated

In May 1996, Base and Sector Honolulu became separate commands, with the sector retaining operational missions and the base focusing on support functions.
