The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, was founded in 1876 and is the smallest of the five federal service academies. Unlike the other academies, admission is based solely on merit with no congressional nominations required. It has continued to modernize its facilities and curriculum to prepare officers for evolving homeland security, maritime law enforcement, and environmental protection missions.
