Where To Live
The San Diego metropolitan area offers a wide variety of neighborhoods for military families, from beach communities to inland areas. Many families choose to live in privatized military housing managed by Lincoln Military Housing, which spans 35-plus communities across the metro area. Others live off base in communities near their installation.
The San Diego coastline is made up of several distinct communities, each with its own character: Imperial Beach, the Silver Strand, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach each offer different lifestyles and price points. Inland communities such as Murphy Canyon provide affordable options with strong military ties. Carlsbad, Del Mar, and La Jolla to the north offer upscale living, while East County communities such as Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Santee, and El Cajon offer more affordable options for families assigned to installations farther east.
The average San Diego daytime temperature is 70 degrees, most days are sunny, humidity is generally low, and average annual rainfall is less than 10 inches. The natural air conditioning effect of the Pacific Ocean keeps coastal areas cooler; moving a few miles inland brings warmer temperatures.
