The Air Force Armament Museum is the world’s only museum dedicated to the preservation and memorabilia of the aircraft that are associated with the Air Force Armament. The museum is home to 29 different aircraft that date back to World War II through the modern day. The museum has a lot to offer and is a great place to learn more about the Air Force Armament.

About the Air Force Armament Museum

The museum is home to many Air Force aircraft and many pieces from the armament, including bombs, bomblets, missiles, and a gun collection. The museum was officially established in 1976 when it began to build its collection, and it officially opened to the public in 1985. An AC-130, B-17, B-25, B-52, P-51, A-10, F-15, F-16, F-100, and F-101 are all examples of the types of aircraft you are able to see at the Florida Air Museum. The museum also runs a film on the history of Eglin Air Force Base and its role in developing the armament. The film is 32 minutes long and runs continuously throughout the day. There is no need to give advance notice if you are bringing a large group to the museum, but they encourage you to call ahead to make sure there are no previously scheduled functions happening. If your group is bringing children along, the museum requires children under 10 years of age to be accompanied by one adult for every five to seven children. With its being right near the Eglin Air Force Base, the museum is a great option to choose for some entertainment during your free time.

Museum Exhibits

The centerpiece of the Florida museum’s display of aircraft is the SR-17 Blackbird. This is the fastest plane that was ever built and is accompanied by planes from many different wars, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the Gulf War. When touring the museum, you’ll be taken through each era that the aircraft and pieces of the armaments came from. In each section of the museum, you’ll learn about each display and the history behind them. Aside from displays featuring specific wars, the other exhibits that are included in the museum are modern weapons, aircraft, airpower, armament, the gun vault, and special operations.

Location and Other Information

The Air Force Armament Museum, Fort Walton Beach, is free of charge for anyone. The museum has had over 2 million visitors since it opened. They’ve also had a number of important military ceremonies take place at the museum. Promotions, retirements, reenlistments, and meetings all happen at the Florida museum each month, as well as visits from schools, churches, and Veteran groups almost daily.

The Air Force Armament Museum is located on Highway 85 South, and it’s 7 miles north of Fort Walton Beach. The museum offers self-guided tours, and you are encouraged to take pictures during your time there. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop before you head out!
