1942

Construction of Four Bases Begins Northeast of Norfolk

At the start of World War II, Navy planners recognized the a large number of American troops would need to land on foreign shores in the face of enemy gunfire, and this would be a difficult operation. It would also require new methods and techniques to be developed, and extensive training would need to take place to ensure enough sufficient men would be proficient in the complicated art of the amphibious. Four bases (Camp Bradford, Camp Shelton, U.S. Naval Frontier Base, and Amphibious Training Base) were constructed for this purpose.

1944

Forty Story Transitions to a Convalescent Hospital

From 1944 to 1946, Fort Story served as a convalescent hospital for returning veterans of World War II. 13,472 patients were taken care of at the hospital by the time it closed in March 1946.

1945

The present installation was renamed the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek with a commissioning date of August 10, 1945. It was designated a permanent base in 1946.

1946

Amphibious Training Begins at Fort Story

The first amphibious training at Fort Story began in 1946 with the arrival of the 458th Amphibious Truck Company and the famous Army DUKWS. Fort Story was officially transferred to the Transportation Training Command, Fort Eustis. It was designated a Transportation Corps installation for use in training amphibious and terminal units in the conduct of Logistics-Over-The-Shore operations.

1961

Fort Story Declared a Permanent Installation

Fort Story was declared a permanent installation on December 5, 1961. On July 1, 1962, it was redesignated a Class I sub-installation of Fort Eustis.

Some parts of Norfolk have a lower cost of living than Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, but may be less desirable from the standpoint of traffic, infrastructure, safety, and school district quality. Some of the more desirable neighborhoods in Norfolk have been listed below. Luckily, BAH in Hampton Roads is among the highest in the country, making more expensive areas like Chesapeake and Virginia Beach accessible to most service members.
