The base serves as a major strategic airlift and sealift hub, leveraging both its airfield and access to the port of Charleston. JB Charleston is one of the key nodes in the military's global mobility network.

The two primary hubs of the joint base are the Air Base, located in North Charleston (formerly Charleston Air Force Base), and the Weapons Station, located in Goose Creek (formerly Charleston Naval Weapons Station)
