Local Schools (K-12)
Generally, students living at the Air Station will attend Charleston County Schools, and students living at the Weapons Station will attend Berkeley County Schools. Other local options include Dorchester County Schools, public charter schools, and local private schools.
Charleston County Schools
Charleston County Schools is a great school district serving over 50,000 students across 88 schools. It is one of the top 10 school districts in the state and has an average A grade from Niche. Students living at the Air Station attend Lambs Elementary or Hunley Park Elementary (K-5), Zucker Middle School, a science magnet school (6-8), or Stall High School (9-12).
While the overall district is highly rated, these individual schools are all rated average or slightly above. In addition to Stall High School, upper-level high school students have the opportunity to attend the Early College High School.
Charleston does have a Choice School program that allows students from military families to apply for attendance at up to three CCSD schools they would prefer to attend; however, admission and transportation are not guaranteed outside of the school a student is districted to. The School Liaison can support this process.
Berkeley County Schools
Berkeley County Schools is an above-average school district that serves over 40,000 students across 48 schools. Niche gives the district an overall grade of B+, with some schools surpassing that score and others falling below.
Students living at the Weapons Station attend Marrington Elementary School (K-5), Marrington Middle School of the Arts, an arts-infused magnet school (6-8), and Goose Creek High School, home to the Berkeley Center for the Arts (9-12). All of these schools are considered above-average schools by Niche.
In addition to Goose Creek High School, Juniors and Seniors also have the option of attending the Berkeley Middle College program.
All active-duty families living in Berkeley County are able to choose to send their children to Marrington schools, whether or not they live in the area districted to those schools; however, transportation is only provided for base residents. The School Liaison can help navigate this policy.
Dorchester County School District 2
Dorchester County has four separate school districts. The closest to the Air Station, which serves the community of Summerville, is Dorchester County School District 2 (DD2). DD2 serves more than 25,000 students across 27 schools and is considered a school system of excellence.
Niche gives the district an A- grade overall, with all schools in the district receiving an above-average rating of at least a B-. DD2 does not have a separate early college high school program, but Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes are available at individual high schools throughout the district.
