Joint Base Langley-Eustis History
Named AfterSamuel Pierpont Langley (civilian aviation pioneer); Brevet Brigadier General Abraham Eustis
Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia, was created in 2010 by merging Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis. Langley is home to the headquarters of Air Combat Command and the 1st Fighter Wing, flying the F-22 Raptor. Fort Eustis hosts the Army's Transportation Corps School and various aviation and logistics units. 1917
Langley Field Established
Langley Field was established adjacent to Hampton, Virginia, as one of the first permanent Army Air Service installations, named after aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. The field became an early hub for military aviation development and scientific aeronautical research.
1920
NACA Langley Research Center Opens
The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory opened at Langley Field in 1920, becoming the nation's first dedicated aeronautics research center. NACA Langley later became NASA Langley Research Center — the birthplace of the American space program.
1946
Tactical Air Command Established at Langley
Tactical Air Command (TAC) was established at Langley Field on March 21, 1946, as the primary combat air force for land-based tactical air power in the continental United States. Langley became the permanent headquarters for TAC — the Air Force's premier tactical fighting force throughout the Cold War.
1976
First Operational F-15 Eagle Wing
The 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley AFB became the world's first operational F-15 Eagle wing in 1976, fielding the Air Force's new twin-engine air superiority fighter. The 1st Fighter Wing and its F-15s remained the standard for American air superiority for the next three decades.

Parking information
When it comes to parking at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the good news for newcomers is that the base follows simplified Department of Defense parking policies. Like most military installations today, JBLE no longer requires personnel to register privately owned vehicles for special base windshield decals. Instead, your active DoD ID card or approved visitor pass scanned at the gate authorizes your vehicle to be on the installation. While base decals are a thing of the past, all vehicles must remain street-legal. This means they require current state registration, valid license plates, up-to-date state inspections, and proof of minimum liability insurance. Additionally, motorcycle riders must comply with specific DoD safety regulations, including completing an approved safety course and wearing proper protective equipment to ride and park on base.
Once a visitor has successfully obtained their temporary pass from the Visitor Control Center, finding a place to park is generally straightforward. Guests are free to park in standard, unmarked parking spaces across the installation. This includes the unassigned spaces in residential housing and barracks areas, as well as the ample general parking lots located at the Commissary, Base Exchange, and the medical facilities on both sides of the base.
To avoid receiving a ticket from Security Forces or Military Police, all drivers must pay close attention to restricted areas. It is strictly prohibited to park in spots designated by signs for specific ranks, roles, or awards, such as those marked for the Commander, First Sergeant, or "Employee of the Month." Furthermore, vehicles must never be parked in front of yellow gates or along roads painted with yellow hash marks, as these are designated fire and emergency response zones. Parking on the grass or seeded areas is also strictly prohibited; vehicles must remain in paved or officially designated gravel overflow lots unless explicitly directed otherwise during major events.
Finally, for personnel bringing oversized recreational items, standard parking lots are not a long-term option. Privately owned boats, campers, RVs, and baggage trailers cannot be left in barracks parking lots or parked on the street in front of base housing. Instead, these items must be registered with the base Outdoor Recreation office. Newcomers typically receive a short grace period of about seven working days upon arrival to secure a spot and move their oversized vehicles into the designated recreational storage lots on the installation.

Where To Live
Hampton Roads encompasses 11 cities and six counties in southeastern Virginia and offers a wide range of communities for military families. Hampton, which borders Langley AFB, is described as the hub of Hampton Roads and America's oldest continuously English-speaking settlement, with access to more than 100 area attractions. Newport News, home to Fort Eustis, offers Newport News Park — one of the largest municipal parks in the U.S. — and a variety of housing options along the James River. Like most cities, both Newport News and Hampton have some areas that are better than others in terms of safety and school quality.
York County, Poquoson, and Seaford are popular choices for families seeking top-rated schools, low crime, and waterfront living near JBLE-Langley. However, these areas are generally more expensive and require a longer commute to base.
The region's mild, four-season coastal climate and 11,684 miles of shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and multiple rivers make Hampton Roads an attractive area for outdoor recreation year-round.
