Introduction

Welcome to Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia. In accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission report, Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis merged their administrative functions, becoming Joint Base Langley-Eustis in 2010. Unlike other joint bases that share common boundaries, Langley Air Force Base in Hampton and Fort Eustis in Newport News are separated by about 20 miles. The Hampton Roads metropolitan region — including Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Newport News, Virginia — is home to JBLE. The bases together have more than 20,000 military personnel and civilian workers, according to the 2020 Joint Base Langley-Eustis Economic Impact Analysis. In all, JBLE had a total economic impact of $3.3 billion. Langley AFB is the host of the 633rd Air Base Wing, the 1st Fighter Wing and the 192nd Fighter Wing. Fort Eustis is home to the 733rd Mission Support Group, 7th Transportation Brigade, the 128th Aviation Brigade and the 597th Transportation Brigade. Joint Base Langley-Eustis is nestled in Virginia’s Hampton Roads region, with Hampton and Newport News being some of the largest communities nearby. Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

Langley AFB

Upon arrival, contact your assigned unit and your sponsor for in-processing instructions and information. Temporary lodging is provided at Langley Inn, 70 Nealy Ave. When you report to the Military Personnel Flight at 45 Nealy Ave., Suite 218, bring the package your previous base provided to you and any other moving paperwork. A newcomer’s orientation provides briefings about support services at the base. Spouses are encouraged to attend this orientation. Fort Eustis

Cities Near Joint Base Langley-Eustis

While many military family members call base housing their home, others choose to live in nearby communities. This area, known as “America’s First Region,” includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk, as well as other smaller cities, counties and towns of Hampton Roads. The cost of living in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia is just slightly below the national average, so rental housing and real estate is affordable. The name “Hampton Roads,” almost 400 years old, has been in use since the region was a struggling British outpost in the 17th century. It refers to the large natural harbor where the James, Nansemond and Elizabeth rivers pour into the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. “Roads” is short for roadstead, which in nautical terms means “a place less sheltered than a harbor where ships may ride at anchor.”

Hampton

The city of Hampton is the hub of Hampton Roads. Today, Hampton is a regional shopping and entertain­ment destination with easy access to more than 100 attractions. The city of Hampton, population 134,510, has multiple resources to help newcomers make informed decisions when considering home-buying.

Newport News

The city of Newport News lies between Fort Eustis to the north and Langley Air Force Base to its southeast. The city’s 179,225 residents enjoy one of the largest municipal parks in the U.S. Newport News Park offers hiking, biking, boating, fishing, archery and camping.

Poquoson

In the city of Poquoson, population 12,271, new homes contrast with old farmhouses, and families whose roots are generations deep mingle with newcomers looking to escape big city living. The city of Williamsburg, population 14,954 in 2019 and onetime capital of Colonial Virginia, stretches along a high, wooded spine occupied by the original Middle Plantation between the James and York rivers on the Virginia Penin­sula, and these days is a mecca for history buffs, retirees and ardent golfers. Williamsburg is a college town as well, site of the prestigious William & Mary College, founded in 1693, and the Williamsburg Regional Library is known as one of the best in the country. There are many options for your child's education near Joint Base Langley-Eustis offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local daycares and child care programs on and off base. Many children who live on JBLE attend schools in Hampton City Schools District, the Newport News Public Schools District and the Norfolk Public Schools District. There are no DoDEA schools on base. Joint Base Langley-Eustis enjoys all four seasons in a mild, temperate coastal climate, Residents enjoy the many out­door recreational options in Virginia year-round. Average temperatures in the summer months hover around a humid 77 degrees. Average fall temperatures are approximately 62 degrees. In the winter, the Hampton Roads area around JBLE receives an average of 10.37 inches of precipitation, with an average temperature of 42 degrees.
