WELCOME TO NAVAL BASE KITSAP (NBK)

By Tracy Fuga

Welcome to your new home at Naval Base Kitsap (NBK)! The base serves as the host command for the Navy’s fleet throughout the Pacific Northwest, providing exceptional services, programs, and facilities to meet the needs of its hosted war-fighting commands, tenant activities, and personnel.

Naval Base Kitsap is the third-largest Navy installation in the United States, and arguably the most complex. It is home to a diverse range of high-value strategic missions, including all types of submarines, two Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and the largest fuel depot in the Continental U.S. Kitsap is also the home of several research, development, testing, and evaluation commands that ensure the Navy’s technological advantage over the rest of the world.

With close proximity to Seattle, and sitting in one of the most desirable locations within the Pacific Northwest, you’ll find NBK feels like home from the moment you arrive.

History of Kitsap Naval Base

In 1891, 190 acres of wilderness were purchased in Bremerton, Washington for $10,000 or roughly $350,000-$400,000 in today’s currency.

Naval Station Puget Sound was originally established at the location and by 1900, the base was a shipyard with a major role—it was the only repair shop on the West Coast until 1941.

The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard was producing the largest ships on the West Coast and totaled 85 ships created from 1917 until 1969.

During World War II, the Naval Station attracted tens of thousands of workers to meet peak demands, and in 1961, the facility began repairing nuclear vessels.

Naval Base Kitsap Bangor came to be in 1942 as a location known for shipping much-needed ammunition throughout the Pacific during WWII.

History continued after Kitsap Naval Base Bangor was selected to be the homeport of the first squadron of Trident Submarines in the ‘70s, officially activating Naval Submarine Base, Bangor that same decade.

Fast forward to 1998, and Naval Station Bremerton became the newest homeport for the Navy, and just like that, the branch had a lot of bases in close proximity to each other.

A reorganization was brought about in 2004 to join the installations into Naval Base Kitsap as we know it now, though the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard operates independently in the area.

Today, there are several objectives for NBK, including operating as the host command for the Navy's fleet in West Puget Sound.

You’ll find state-of-the-art technology and practices to develop, maintain, and support military families, along with the aircraft carriers, submarines, and surface ships that call the base home.

Featuring over 12,000 acres of property, the base hosts more than 70 tenant commands and is also responsible for Naval Hospital Bremerton

Naval Base Kitsap Nuclear Weapons

NBK is home to more deployed nuclear weapons than any other location in the world.

Such is the case when you’re the homeport for a fleet of ballistic missile submarines, one of the two nuclear weapon facilities for the U.S., and one of four American nuclear shipyards.

It’s estimated that NBK holds around 720 nuclear warheads making the base a vital component for national security, nuclear deterrence, and protecting American interests throughout the Pacific and beyond.

Naval Base Kitsap Dolphins

The U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program has trained dolphins since 1967 and since 2010, these underwater allies have been helping NBK protect its nukes.

Dolphins at Naval Base Kitsap help find underwater mines with their special sonar.

If they find a mine, they return to their handler, who gives them a buoy to mark the spot.

This warns ships to stay away while Navy Divers remove the threat. To catch enemy divers, dolphins bump them and attach a buoy, which pulls the diver to the surface for capture.

Additionally, while dolphins are part of the team, so are sea lions. Similar to dolphins, sea lions help find enemy divers but use a mouth-held handcuff to attach the buoy.

Where Is Naval Base Kitsap?

You’ll find Naval Base Kitsap nestled within the Kitsap Peninsula across the breathtaking Puget Sound, slightly northwest of Seattle, comprised of the following cities:

  • Bremerton
  • Bangor
  • Keyport
  • Indian Island
  • Manchester

Although most of the Kitsap, Washington naval base calls Kitsap County home, some of the installations are also found in Jefferson County.

Due to the variety of gates and access points in the area, knowing where to go is essential for anyone stationed at NBK. Here are important driving directions that will help you get to the base with ease:

Base Housing and Directions

Naval Base Kitsap is approximately 30 miles west of Seattle but the Puget Sound divides the area so depending on the time, it’s faster to drive a longer route instead of crossing multiple waterways via ferries.

If you’re looking to go to the USN Bangor Main Gate Visitor Control Center, here’s how you drive there uninterrupted by ferry travel:

  • 1. If you are driving, you’ll take Interstate 5 south until you see the signs for State Route 16.
  • 2. Go west until you merge onto WA-3 North.
  • 3. Use the right two lanes to take the WA-308 East exit toward Keyport/Naval Base Kitsap/Bangor.
  • 4. This will take you to the main gate, which is open 24 hours a day.

Amtrak Station Near Naval Base Kitsap

If you arrive by train, the King Street Station in Seattle is the stop nearest to the base, roughly 75 minutes away.

Ferries Near Naval Base Kitsap

It can be quicker, easier, and more fun to travel from Seattle to Naval Base Kitsap via Washington State Ferries , depending on road conditions, the time of day, and other factors that all play a part.

Reaching the ferry terminal on Burwell Street is only a three-mile drive west of the main gate.

There is a daily ferry that connects travelers from Seattle to Bremerton and back again, several times day or night. On average, ferries run every hour and 20 minutes or so.

Please note that you may also have access to the ferry terminal through the shipyard gate downtown.

However, you can’t pass without getting permission in advance and will need to be taking the route for official business.

Driving Directions from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

If you are traveling by air, you will land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport , and a shuttle service is available to take you directly to Naval Base Kitsap.

Keep in mind reservations are recommended if you plan to use the shuttle. Additionally, a dozen rental car agencies are available at the airport with shuttles to their offsite locations:

  1. If you are driving from the airport, follow the signs to access I-5 and head south going toward Tacoma.
  2. Stay on I-5 until you reach state Route 16.
  3. Continue west until you merge onto WA-3 North.
  4. Use the right two lanes to take the WA-308 East exit toward Keyport/Naval Base Kitsap/Bangor.
  5. If you are driving a rental car, you will need to stop at the Visitor's Center on the left as you enter Naval Base Kitsap to obtain a temporary/visitor's pass for the vehicle.

Best Places to Live Near Naval Base Kitsap

There are several cities near Naval Base Kitsap. Bremerton is (obviously) closest to the Bremerton side of the base and Silverdale is closer to the Bangor side.

All cities listed below are situated alongside major roadways, making it easy to get to and from the installation.

Bainbridge Island, WA

Bainbridge Island is situated in the Puget Sound between Seattle and the Kitsap Peninsula.

You can easily connect to Seattle via ferry or to Kitsap by car. Living on the island feels like you’re permanently on vacation, with eclectic boutiques, scenic vistas, amazing restaurants, and an abundance of outdoor activities.

It’s small and quaint, with more than 25,000 who call it home.

Housing is on the higher end and is scarce but that’s likely due to the great schools and overall higher cost of living in the extended Seattle area.

There are year-round outdoor activities, including numerous beaches, parks, and trails .

Take a stroll through Bloedel Reserve , a 150-acre exquisitely landscaped forest garden on the northern end of the island, or check out the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial , an outdoor exhibit commemorating the tragic internment of Japanese Americans from the island.

Bremerton, WA

Bremerton is the largest city in the region, with a population of  41,000+, and is just a short ferry ride from Seattle.

There is so much to love about Bremerton: the city is full of arts, culture, and diversity, and its location is ideal for those stationed at Naval Base Kitsap.

The city has unique neighborhoods with new and affordable (relatively speaking) housing, excellent schools, and more than 30 parks.

Visit the fabulous fountains, public plazas, parks, and memorials around the Bremerton waterfront and Arts District.

A few blocks north of downtown is Evergreen Rotary Park featuring the 9/11 Memorial . Nearby Gold Mountain Golf Course includes two 18-hole championship courses and disc golf is available at NAD Park .

The peninsula is home to dozens of military cemeteries, memorials, and historic sites that honor those who served and died for our country.

Silverdale, WA

Centrally located on the Kitsap Peninsula, Silverdale offers scenic trails, award-winning breweries, and beachfront hotels with stunning views of Dyes Inlet, Mount Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, and glorious sunsets.

Not to mention that it’s right outside the gates of the Bangor side of Naval Base Kitsap. Easy beach access leads to tons of outdoor fun, and an array of cool shops, malls, movie theaters, and a bowling alley offer plenty of indoor activities, too.

The city is full of history with buildings from the 1800s still in use today in Old Town Silverdale, as well as, Silverdale Waterfront Park , one of the most popular in the area, perfect for family outings or outdoor birthday parties.
