Of the many military installations in the San Diego metro area, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is the farthest from the hubbub of downtown. However, that doesn't mean there's any shortage of fun things to do. Start at UC San Diego's Birch Aquarium. With its seasonal programs for all ages, regular events, and special activities that vary by the day, you'll want to visit again and again. And luckily for you, the IT&T office can hook you up with discounted tickets. Kids will also love playing and exploring at the Children's Museum of Discovery and Tiny Tiger Indoor Playground. For those adults who are still kids at heart, there's Brewski's Bar and Arcade with its variety of games, pinball machines, and more, or Mesa Rim, an indoor climbing gym where all skill levels are welcome. If your dogs are your kids, don't fret. The area around Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has plenty of dog parks and dog-friendly hiking trails. Plus, there are great restaurants like Tamarindo Del Mar, which is a tech-spec spot that has a special menu for your dog. This is just one of the many great restaurants in the nearby area, serving up a variety of different cuisines from Indian and Italian to sushi and beyond. When you're ready to leave town for a long weekend, you're just a few hours from two of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, Los Angeles and Palm Springs. Odds are you'll only be stationed at Miramar for a few years, so make the most of it while you can.
