Welcome to Naval Station Norfolk, the powerhouse of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and the world's largest naval installation. Established as Naval Operating Base Norfolk in 1917 during World War I, this massive installation was renamed in the early 1950s and has been making history ever since. Today, the base supports more than 75,000 military personnel and civilian employees. As the premier homeport for the Atlantic Fleet, it is the operational staging ground for massive aircraft carriers, stealthy submarines, and dozens of high-flying aircraft squadrons. If you've just received your orders and are pulling into Norfolk, you'll start at Gate 2 on Hampton Boulevard. From there, swing by the PAS9D Center near Gate 5 to get your credentials. Navy Housing Services will be standing by to help you track down the perfect new home while the Base Commissary and Navy Exchange are fully stocked with everything you need to get settled. When the weekend rolls around, the base comes alive. Knock down some pins at the Pearside Entertainment Center or head down to the marina to cast a line or master the wind with a sailing lesson. And when you're ready for a break from base, you're just minutes away from the vibrant energy of downtown Norfolk's waterside district. Craving some sand and surf? It's only a short drive to the stunning coastlines of Virginia Beach and the epic shores of North Carolina's Outer Banks. From unmatched naval history to incredible coastal adventures, Naval Station Norfolk has something for everyone.
