About Tyndall AFB

Tyndall Air Force Base is located on a peninsula southeast of Panama City and is surrounded by the East Bay, the Saint Andrew Bay, and the Saint Andrew Sound. Once a wild land of heavy brush and swamps, Tyndall was founded as a gunnery range in 1941. The base was named after Florida native and recipient of the Silver Star, Lieutenant Francis B. Tyndall, a veteran of World War I. Students would arrive at Tyndall through World War II to train at the range, the most famous being Clark Gable. Tyndall would change hands over the years, from an Air Training Command Installation to an Aerospace Defense Command.
