Introduction

Welcome to Dyess Air Force Base, located 8 miles out from Abilene, Texas. About 13,000 personnel and their families are active on the base that covers about 6,409 acres. Abilene is a military-friendly town with a close-knit community. You’ll be flying through Abilene Regional Airport that’s just a quick drive from the other side of the city. American Airlines and United Airlines both make direct flights in and out of this smaller airport.

Entering Dyess Air Force Base and Amenities

All drivers on base must have a valid military ID, veterans or retiree ID, a valid driver’s license, and a valid driver’s insurance card. All visitors must stop by the Visitor Control Center through the Dyess Main Gate on Arnold Blvd.

Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel

For all military personnel arriving during duty hours, contact your unit or squadron of assignment immediately. Your Commander Support Staff (CSS) will in-process you from there and schedule you for your mandatory in-processing and Newcomer’s Welcoming/Orientation briefings. You will need these items for your appointment: IDA worksheet, orders, and mandates, envelope from your losing base, any graduation certificates that apply, and all travel receipts. At Dyess Air Force Base, you can expect weather fairly typical of Texas with hot and humid summers. Over the summer, the temperatures can sit in the average range of the mid to upper 90’s while reaching temperatures just over 100 at times. So be sure to pack the sunscreen and have water with you wherever you go. Winters are short, dry, and cold. The temperatures in the winter can hang around in the 30’s sometimes getting into the low 20’s.
