Fort Leavenworth is found on the border of Kansas and Missouri in Leavenworth County, Kansas. The post overlooks the Missouri River. To the southeast of post is Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri; to the west of post is Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas; and to the north of post is St. Joseph, Missouri.

1. Take Interstate 29 north to Platte City, Missouri.
2. Exit on Highway 92 west. Follow this highway to Leavenworth, Kansas.

From Interstate 70

1. Take Exit 224 toward US-73/KS-7/Bonner Springs/Leavenworth.
2. Turn right (north) onto US-73/KS-7.
3. Drive through Lansing (Main Street) and Leavenworth (Fourth Street).

Cities Near Fort Leavenworth

While many military family members call post housing their home, others choose to live in nearby communities. The neighboring communities of Atchison, Basehor, Lansing, and Leavenworth in Kansas and Platte City and Weston in Missouri provide housing, employment, and other services for Fort Leavenworth military families. The cost of living in Leavenworth is lower than the national average, so area rental housing and real estate is reasonable.

Atchison

The city of Atchison, Kansas, is about 25 miles north of Fort Leavenworth. The riverside city has a population of approximately 10,600 people. Atchison is home to several historical homes and museums, including the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum and the Atchison Rail Museum. The city's International Forest of Friendship, which overlooks Lake Warnock, serves as a living memorial to the world history of aviation and aerospace. Atchison also has an event center, a dog park, a community garden, and a number of community parks.

Leavenworth

The city of Leavenworth, Kansas, offers a short commute to Fort Leavenworth. Leavenworth is home to approximately 36,000 people. The city has a number of attractions, including a carousel museum, Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park, and the Richard Allen Cultural Center, which highlights African-American history. A community center, a performing arts center, and more than 20 community parks provide plenty of opportunities for recreation and the arts.

Weston

Across the Missouri River, north of Fort Leavenworth, is Weston, Missouri. This small city is home to 1,700 people. Weston Bend State Park offers scenic views of the Missouri River, camping, trails, picnic sites, and more. Weston's Snow Creek Mountain Resort offers skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and winter fun. The city also has a dog park and community parks that offer playgrounds, picnic areas, trails, sports courts, and more.

Fort Leavenworth Schools

There are many options for your child's education near Fort Leavenworth. Kansas offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local daycares and child care programs on and off post. Children in grades K-9 who live on post may attend schools in Fort Leavenworth Unified School District 207. Children in grades 10-12 who live on post may attend Leavenworth High School in the Leavenworth USD 453 district. There are no DoDEA schools on post. Fort Leavenworth Weather

Fort Leavenworth enjoys all four seasons. In the winter, average highs are in the 30s and 40s and average lows hover near 20 degrees. In the summer, temperatures soar to the high 80s and low 90s, with average lows in the 60s. Fort Leavenworth gets about 40 inches of rain and about 14 inches of snow annually.
