FORT LEONARD WOOD BREAKS GROUND ON 56 NEW HOMES FOR FAMILIES
Soldiers and their families assigned to Fort Leonard Wood (FLW) in Waynesville, MO, will soon be getting some swanky new digs. On Dec 10th, a groundbreaking took place in FLW’s Woodlands Housing Area to mark the official beginning of the construction of 56 new homes in 28 duplex units.
Housing Investment Focused on Readiness & Quality of Life
Col. Alexander Lovasz, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood deputy commanding officer, said the groundbreaking was about more than construction; it was about quality of life.
“Fort Leonard Wood is built on the foundation of readiness, and readiness begins at home,” Lovasz said. “This new family housing development is a direct investment in the people who make this installation mission-ready every day.”
Project Scope & Construction Details
The construction of 56 new on-post homes at Fort Leonard Wood (FLW) is being managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, in conjunction with FLW's family housing office.
This effort involves building 28 duplex units as part of a larger $50 million project. The comprehensive initiative includes the demolition of old housing and significant site work, as well as infrastructure upgrades to support the new residences.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the service members and families that call Fort Leonard Wood their home. Your dedication inspires everything that we do,” said Shawna Swanson, Balfour Beatty Communities Operations vice president.
She added that the new homes were designed with today’s military families in mind.
“They include modern layouts, energy-efficient features, and will also have three Americans with Disability Act-compliant homes to ensure accessibility,” Swanson said.
Designed for Today's Military Families
The new homes will be located near the Woodlands Community Center, an elementary school, and neighborhood playgrounds.
“We look forward to celebrating again when these homes open their doors to the service members and families who deserve them,” Lovasz said.
Balfour Beatty Communities has partnered with the Army at Fort Leonard Wood since acquiring housing interests at the installation in 2008. During that time, the company has constructed 632 new homes and renovated approximately 1,150 homes across seven on-post neighborhoods.
The Woodland construction project is part of a broader effort to address aging housing across the Army’s privatized housing portfolio. Officials involved in the project have described the initiative as part of a long-term approach to replacing outdated units and upgrading infrastructure to better meet current housing standards and resident needs.
The upcoming housing area is planned to feature: energy-efficient building systems and appliances, three ADA-compliant units for families needing accessible layouts, and close access to schools, community centers, and recreation spaces. These additions are expected to help improve quality of life for service members and their families.
