Introduction
Welcome to Fort McCoy, located in the Coulee Region of West Central Wisconsin. The post is sitting on about 60,000 acres of land right off Highway 21 in the middle of Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin. 450 military personnel and 2500 civilians work on the installation with about 3000 students on location as well. Fort McCoy is named for Major General Robert Bruce McCoy who was a distinguished veteran of World War I. You will find many things to do in your new home around Fort McCoy. You’ll be flying through La Crosse Regional Airport that’s just under an hour of drive time away from Fort McCoy. The largest International Airport near post is out of Minneapolis from Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport. Entering Fort McCoy and Post Amenities
All drivers on base must have a valid military ID, veterans or retiree ID, a valid driver’s license, and a valid driver’s insurance card. All visitors must stop by the Visitor Control Center located off of South M Street as you enter the post from the south.Check-in Procedures for Incoming Personnel
For all military personnel arriving during duty hours, you must report to the Visitor’s Center next off of South M Street. You must have a visitor’s pass while on the installation, and you must in-process through your assigned unit on post. You will need these items for your processing appointment: orders, and mandates, envelope from your losing post, any graduation certificates that apply, and all travel receipts. Fort McCoy School Options
Fort McCoy has no elementary or secondary schools on post. For school-aged children living on post, they will be bused to the Sparty area for schooling. Tomah, WI also has a school system for those living off base in that area. The school districts in the area are Holmen, La Crosse, Onalaska, Sparta, Tomah, West Salem, and Bangor. Depending on where you live will determine the school district your student will attend. You will have a wide range of schools to choose from, so be sure to know what’s near you based on location. At Fort McCoy, you’ll experience a wide range of temperature changes throughout the course of the year. This is because of the continental climate in the region. July can see temperatures reach the 80’s (Fahrenheit), making summers comfortable and warm. But winter can swing the complete other direction. Winter can reach into the lower 20s on average and can often get to the 0-degree mark. There is a significant amount of snow, with an average of 40 inches falling every year.
